You say it's standard but what do you mean , they had a single 1 1/4" SU at first but later a single 1 1/2" SU . Does it have anything else done to it ? It should easily go more than 3,500 or is that full throttle in 4th gear under load ? Safely a standard motor in good condition should go to 4,500 or 5,000 , could probably go higher but unless you know the condition of it fully best to stick to that .

My first car was a 998LS with the standard tacho. And when it kept blowing the speedo cable, we learnt to just drive it by the tacho. I.e. 4000rpm in 4th gear was 100km/h exactly. And it was good for 130kmh.

3500..... geez mate its not a diesel landcruiser! Surely it'll do more then that? My 1330 does 7000 through the first 3 gears no worries.

I guess you could mistake the 3 for an 8 though? 8500 is more like it!!!!!!

What brand of tacho is it? Stock or aftermarket?

Mine had a shot headgasket, bad coil, bad plugs, bad dizzy cap, points and condensor... revved to 4500rpm like that... then went bang :)

Check the tacho, or try another one, some mini's sound like they are going to explode at 5000rpm but they are fine.
