Post subject:  Problems with Indicators

Hi,

Driving home from work yesterday I realised that my indicators were blinking rapidly (and erratically).

No bulbs are out and it's the same for right and left but when all are put on as hazard lights they seem to blink correctly.

What's my first step?
Switch?
Flasher unit?

If you've got no blown bulbs, it's the flasher unit.

Cool, thought as much, nice to have it confirmed. Just need to see if Karcraft stock it now.

Just doing some googling since posting this question and found that my car has seperate flasher units for hazards and indicators, whereas other models had a combine one (It's a Rover), so it looks very much like the indicator flaher's bitten the dust.

If it's the indicator flasher unit you can get them anywhere, they're all the same. There are two and three pin types, but you can use either (unless you need the three pin type).

At the same time - check the earth - particularly in the boot (near the left hand tail light) where it goes to the boot floor. Make sure it has good metal contact - not metal to paint or rust.

also good to check the number of globes in the system as with older cars only having 2 per side the newer cans are set up for 3 or more the resistance is not enough and so the flash rate is higher :)

I had this same problem whilst running a two pin flasher can for the part 6 months, plugged in a 3 pin flasher can and all is good.

If the car is a Clubman you will need 21/21 Watt 12 Volt bulbs at the back. Lack of wattage will not trigger the flasher unit correctly. One often finds that people fit 21/5 watt bulbs and also end up with very Dim (5W) indicators at the back. I have plenty of the correct Bulbs if any one wants any.
