Hi there. I am about to put my 1100 (recently purchased 2nd hand) onto my original Gearbox. The one under the 1100 is stuffed, the original was good. What else should I change/fix/look at in the process? Obviously things like Clutch etc, but what else? Your thoughts much appreciated. Dicko |

I find it interesting that the block and crank are to be replaced. Given the amount of work to do so, why not take the extra 5 minutes to pull the short block down and rebuild it, rather than replace with another second handy? My thoughts are mainly in the gearbox......just check for signs of wear. If the re-assembled engine is to be more powerful than previously, the gearbox may not last long at all if it's on the way out. |

May well end up doing that whilst I'm at it. The gearbox is off my original 998, which spun a big end bearing (would need to ensure no crap is in the box). It was a good box and changed gears beautifully. We purchased a 2nd hand 1100 & box as we needed to get it on the road quickly. The motor goes well, but the box is stuffed. So the idea is to put both good bits together. It wouldn't be too hard to whip the head off and check bores etc, and maybe do a re-ring and bearings. Then again, I could get some 1100 flat tops off GR and do it properly. ![]() It's not a daily driver anymore so we could have it "off the road" for a little while. Time to start saving $$'s so I can do it nicely I think. ![]() ![]() |

Just checked in with GR yesterday about my engine rebuild. 2 weeks away. 1100 plus 80 thou oversize (1181cc) flat tops @10.5 compression. ![]() How many miles has your 1100 block done? Check bores have not ovaled. Would be a shame to get it all together only to find a problem and take it all out again! Regards |

If I end up doing it properly I would, of course, have to go oversize and have it bored etc. Hmm I've got a spare 12G202 might go and "play" with it. Now where's Vizards book? ![]() ![]() dicko |

Make sure you give the gearbox a good clean - maybe pull the layshaft and oil pickup out to ensure you can get at everything (and clean the oil pickup strainer). In saying that, if you pull the layshaft out you will probably find it needs replacing + the bearings. Obviously you do not want to put components back in that you know are worn. If you don't take them out in the first place, you can plead ignorance. ![]() Also consider fitting a new oil pump and new timing chain whilst you're 'in the area'. It can't hurt, and you would replace them anyway if you were to do a full rebuild. |

change all the gaskets and seals that are not part of the swap as well. ie diff output seals, rocker cover gasket (assuming you will check valve clearances anyway), side covers, timing cover seals etc that way it won't leak oil and force you to pull it all out next pink slip inspection. then you can slowly rebuild the other gearbox and engine properly and still have your car on the road. if you are not going to do the new engine properly, just stick it on the gearbox if you think the box is good. But if you decide to rebuild the new engine, you must rebuild the gearox, because even if it felt good with your old 998, a stonking nwe 1098 will make it feel oh so worn out..... |
