Hi guys,

prepare yourselves for a possible noob question...

Even though here in Townsville i never thought i would need the choke it would seem that I may after all... not that the car is driving yet (not beyond the backyard anyway!!)

so anyway I am wondering about hooking up the choke and i have a gut feeling i am missing something.

Here are some photos...

Image
choke on the left - comes through the firewall and then i have just passed it up through the hole in that plate and then just stowed it out of the way... Accelerator is the one in the black plastic sheath

Image
Just a shot of the choke side of the carby... I have a piece of wire through the connector there so i don't lose it...

Image
Frontal shot - my gut feel is that i need something similar that the accelerator passes through - on the other side for the choke to do similar?? :?:

The other side to this coin is that the choke cable is really quite firm to try and pull through that sheath - so i am tossing up about getting another one as well? or are there any tips to make it easier to slide back and forth?

take the cable and sheath out of the car, pull the cable out of the sheath then clean and grease it, then put it back in and work it back and forth until it's free

I think you're right about something missing - you need someone with a HIF44 to post a pic

I know of 1 other Ausmini member in Townsville... and I do see about a half dozen mini's getting around town so not sure if any other's are members! (i just wish mine was one that was getting around town!)

Simon,

thanks for the advice - I'll definitely give that a shot...

hopefully another helpful person out there has a HIF44 and can add some info for me!

Yes, you need the outer accelerator cable retainer

you can make that up by cutting the piece that is used for this job from an aussie !&2/3 su carby braket

then weld it onto the braket you have there that is clamped between the carby & the manifold

aim it in about the right spot & zap it on

easy-peasy

miniman... I think i get the concept... now it would be a matter of finding access to the parts?
wouldn't there be an existing bracket that has these retainers (or whatever you call them) on both sides that i could just replace what i currently have??

For a normal HIF44 setup you'd need the following bits -

1} http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=37553
2] http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=38526
3] http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=35088

jec74Club your HiF looks like it has the throttle on the right and the choke on the left which is a different sort of configuration from the few that I have seen including my own. The one I have has both throttle and choke on the right. Yours may be a turbo version of some sort.

The bracket looks a though it probably been hand made or modified from an HS4. Unless you can source what would be a rather "unusual" originla bracket you probably need to do as miniman said and fabricate some sort of hybrid setup.

I know Josh (mini_imports) had some normal HIFF44 brackets made up and for sale. Perhaps you could contact him and then modify it by welding a piece off an HS bracket on the throttle side. He may also be able to help you out with a second hand choke clip. Steve at Brickworks might also be able to help.

With those mods you'd be able to use existing throttle and choke cables....

My 2 cents anyway...

Further to my earlier post. Look here and on part 16 you can see a piece sticking out. Bet this is the plate you carby originally had with it....

TasTyger,

Thanks for your 2cents - more than happy to take that onboard... in fact you have me thinking and got me 'googling' for images

apologise if this next question is completely insane - but is it possible that the person who assembled the carby simply put the accelerator linkage on the wrong side of the carby? so therefore i could feasibly reverse this and then have throttle and choke both on the same side? which would allow me to source one of these standard HIF44 abutment plates and use that!?!?

I don't think so. The fast idle screw (the screw on the throttle spindle that will be hit by the choke cam thingy when you turn the choke on) appears to be correct. Also the throttle stop cast into the carby body appears to be correct for how it is set up now.

It should be possible to use two brackets instead of welding them too. Just stick another gasket in-between the plates. Probably a neater solution to weld it, but if you don't have a welder the second bracket should be fine.

The choke and throttle linkages are a physical part of the carby. You can 't do anything to change them around.

Your stuck with having to do some sort of modification job or creating a new bracket for things to work properly.
