Gents, what is the easiest way to flush out trhe cooling system, without disconnecting the bottom radiator hose, or is that the only functional way to do it.

Ideas or Pics please

I have a rover SPI, so does it have a drain plub on the bottom odf the radiator, bad back restricts me from investigating, knowledge is less painful than looking..

What tools do you have access too ? Does the bottom radiator hose have the heater outlet on it ?

In the past I've put a commercial radiator flush through the engine , then taken the thermostat out (don't be too critical about gasket at this stage , just bolt the housing back on) and filled the radiator with water LEAVING THE CAP OFF . then put an air blower into the heater hose outlet of the bottom hose (crank the compressor's regulator to about 25/30 psi) and give a couple of short blasts (a second or two each) of compressed air This will make a fountain of rusty , cruddy water blast out the top of the radiator , watch out for it...... This forces the water through the radiator in the reverse direction to what it normally flows and knocks off a lot of crap and scale that has built up . It will also make the water flow through the blockquicker than normal and shock some of the crud off there as well .

Only use short sharp blasts of lower pressure air , not a long blast of 80 psi or you might start loosening welsh plugs ....

lol.... well I plan to do my cooper in the next couple of weeks actually - I want to change the head, so I figure I'll flush the block too

I pull the radiator out, flush it both ways with water, full it up, shake the hell out of it, etc. etc.

then take the thermostat out, put the housing back on, clamp a high pressure hose nozzle into the top radiator hose, run the water flat out until it comes out of the bottom radiator hose clean, then clamp it into the bottom hose and flush it the other way, and back again until it's totally clean
