I recently bought a 1969 Morris 1100 S Automatic and drove him back from Geelong to Canberra a few weeks ago....great drive (and then ran out of petrol 5 klm from my front door....have a laugh, I did) Since then I have been reading that some things are hard to find.....particularly oil filters. The article below states that Triumph TR6 filters are only slightly shorter (3/8") and that by stretching the spring they work fine - that was the report rather than the writers experience. The automatic was overhauled in Geelong in 2005 and appears to be OK. When cold it doesn't like reverse much or the 3rd/4th shift when in drive and flares 3rd/4th when changed manually... When warmed up say after a couple of miles it is totally different. He's running Castrol GTX....and will be changed at 1500-2000. The Gregorys manual says that I should be using 10/30 oil without modifiers and I have found that this http://www.trubluoil.com.au/index.php?o ... &Itemid=74 seems to be about the only source....I particularly like that they TELL me that that there are no friction modifiers in it.... Would this help my changing issue? I also feel that he is changing up too early and have read here http://members.tripod.com/austin_america/id72.html (at UPDATE towards the bottom) that adjusting the 'kick down rod' can help this by keeping the revs higher.... any thoughts??? Cheers Kez |

We've had an 1100 auto, an 1100S auto and a 998 MiniMatic (same box) over the years. My MiniMatic handbook states use 10W/30, 10W/40 or 20W/50. 10W/30 is way too thin for Australian conditions, the Gregorys is a UK publication. OK to use it over there in the cold.... ![]() Just run a standard 20W/50 oil. GTX is OK, or Valvoline SF 20W/50, or similar. NO ADDITIVES... so stay away from expensice, fancy oils. Change it and the filter every 1000-1500 miles. ![]() Yes the kickdown rod is how you adjust the shift points. ![]() |

Thanks for that... ....is good to know that I am on the right track. Will keep using the basic 20/50 oil and be v.gentle until it warms up. He's in for wheel bearings and some exhaust welding on Tuesday so I'll get the mechanic to give it 1/2 doz turns of the screw to sort the shift points out and work from there..... ....any ideas about oil filters??? Talk to Karcraft, they would know what one it is- I can't remember. It's shorter and fatter than the MiniMatic one, so that doesn't fit. I think I used to buy Ryco ones for the 1100S, can't remember the part number now. <edit> just browsed their site but no p/no now for the 1100S auto or 1300 auto (same filter). ![]() I would enquire from Western Filters, they are agents for Baldwin Filters (USA) and were the only people that had oil filters recently for a Hillman Imp. ![]() http://www.westernfilters.com.au/filters.html |

Try also Lindsay Siebler at Minis Plus in Melbourne , 0434 393558 , http://www.minis.com.au/ I got some filters for my Mini.Matic from him , and he did have some of the other type for 1275 auto . He's also very reasonably priced for most other parts . |

No, not owned BMC stuff at all before.....driven other peoples every now and then and just felt that I needed a bit of personality back in the driveway after our previous car left.... Regarding the automatic. He is snappy off the mark but the change into top is occuring at about 30-35mph on full but not rammed flat throttle. Mind that is a bit of a guess as the speedo is doing the 1960's 'not quite sure what speed I am doing' wobble.... Kez |

Kez 30-35 MPH....that would be after half a minute or so...yes ![]() Premier Instruments may be able to help with the speedo. I know where there is an MG 1100 for sale with a good engine and gearbox if you want to go manual (I know, sacrelidge! ![]() |

Would that be a Canberra car that is a 'strawberrys and cream' colour? How much did I want that car or at least to have a close look at it. I was talking about it before I went to Geelong to look at Olli and said that 'I'll even follow it to work if I see it just to have a talk to the owner' Regards the speedo, I was thinking that a change of cable could make a difference....though that is another angle to try too... On the gearbox front, I wouldn't change it. They only made 768, 1100 s Automatics and I don't think that there would be many of them left.... Me thinks that a few of the engines have ended up under the bonnets of a Mini here and there... ![]() |

Hi, I have a new Ryco one (NOS) you can have that I don't need. I also have a Baldwin part number cross-reference somewhere. It was for a Massey-Ferguson tractor. You can remove the 1100S filter housing and replace it with one froma Mini-Matic or late Rover Auto. Then you can get the Mini-Matic filters from Karcraft, Brickworx etc. The only problem is the gasket between the filter housing and block is VERY difficult to find. It has two copper o-rings in it that crush when you tighten it, so you can't reuse an old one (I tried!). Cheers, |
