well its never ending today i went to start the mini this morning for a drive to the city. i just had some type M needles put in by the doc himself, started it p and within a few minutes the driver side carbie float bowl was spewing out petrol from the top where the hose is. i took the hose off the check it but it was good. didnt have a chance to pull of the top of the float bowl yet but is it a chance its the float sinking? |

Check the needle and seat. Confirm your float is adjusted correctly. Confirm the float does indeed float. Im sure a mechanically minded chap like yourself could investigate these things. |

Probably a worn out needle and seat (in your freshly rebuilt carbies) It could just be a bit of grit holding the needle off the seat. Get a scewdriver and give the top of the float bowl a good tap with the handle of the screwdriver. (Don't use anything hard so you don't brake anything, a screwdrive handle is about the right weight to do the job) |

yeah well that was gonna be the first thing i do tomorrow pending i get the day off though. just wanna make sure im not gonna forget anything. i just cant believe these carbies cost me $500+ to get rekitted and yet they are playing up  . ill fix it tomorrow hopefully

You cant blame the carbs if a bit of grit has got into the needle/seat.. Blame your fuel system/filter. Was it a public holiday everywhere today? |

SUs don't need fuel filters. Fuel filters are only fitted to stop passages getting blocked up. Anything big enough to block an SU is too big to fit past the strainer in the tank and the strainer in the standard fuel pump. (unless the bit of grit was already in the bottom of the carby) |

well this is the question. was the grit there or has it magicly made its way there?. hmm its wierd that it never did it with the old needles. |

Why would the needle make any difference? As in th eones that just got changed, not the needle and seat. The float bowl is totally separate form the needle. |

There are needles and there are needles and seats. The needle that the doc changed is the metering needle. It has nothing to do with the fuel overflowing the float bowl. The metering needle is well after the needle and seat. The needle and seat controls the level in the float bowl. I wonder if they refitted the old worn out needle and seat? or If they used rubber tipped needles? The rubber (neoprene) tipped needles can react with some fuels. |

that i actually might check tomorrow. im not happy about it at the moment. i have cousins out of town staying with me at the moment that was dieing to go for a ride |
