ok so me and my brother are doing an experiment on one of my 998 engines, we are going to supercharge it using a turbocharger, basic idea is that you get rid of the exhaust driving part, attach a drive shaft to it and run it off a pully.

way lighter than a normal supercharger and a whole lot cheaper,

has anyone ever heard of this been done? or think it will actually work?

apparently its a common thing for mini drag cars?

why would be lighter than any other scroll type supercharger?

Lobe type supercharger are heavier but product more low end mumbo ebfore heat makes them ineffecient. Scroll type are poor down low but are lighter and more effectient.

Sprintex and Raptor superchargers operate just as you suggest

Yes it will work.

BUT
it will not work as well as just using the turbo-supercharger (the proper term for a "turbo") as you loose the power drawn from the pulley.

i was thinking of this as opposed to the normal turbo setup to avoid lag or am i better off just going with a small turbo or supercharger?

Plenty of suppliers have done a gear or belt driven turbocharger. Many kits have been available because of the compact design that can be achieved with one of these. Upside is compact design and cost, down side is the positive coefficient of the design (supercharger with a more noticeable lag, but not as bad as a turbo on it's own) and the gears are also working very hard and may cause some problems later on.

Take a look at this link, you may be able to get a turbo kit made up...

If you get the drive ratio right it might be pretty good with less heat created too, remember that a turob can spin up to 20000rpm and beyond, so pulley ratio will need playing with.

Turbos spin up to around 100,000 rpm usually, good luck driving it that fast with a belt... :lol:
Centrifugal superchargers spin much slower, they are designed for belt drive and their scrolls are way bigger, they are not just converted turbos. :wink:

It won't work. You need to get it doing silly speeds like drmini suggested and turbo bearings are not designed for the type of load you'd be putting on them with a drive belt.

I've seen pictures of one on a mini - was being driven by a toothed belt from around the flywheel, so a HUGE ratio - I think the setup was effective, so if you think it'll work, just give it a go - what have you got to lose ;)

it does work, allready tried :wink:
you have to use ballbearings and a homemade gearcase as the "turbo bearing" is inside the bearing (middle) section of the turbocharger and this will not be used, only the compressor side gets used.
but you have to use first quality material. i broke 2 driveshafts (homemade, too), couldn't find affortable gears and the cheaper ones didn't last and made big noise. and regarding all the time doing it it will be cheaper buying one made for the job

it was in a miniworld/minimag a bundle of years ago.. seemed to work ok...

apparently there is a lot of machining work involved, with getting the shafts and what not dead strait... but i think it made something like 130hp

I was hoping someone would bring this up 8) The whole design of the impeller is completely different because of the lower rpm.

And I'm tired of hearing all about the 'drain of power' from a belt driven supercharger... anyone who says that turbos don't suck power from the engine are kidding themselves. Here's a quote of mine from another forum ---

A turbo also robs power from the engine in the form of back-pressure. But like a supercharger, when the turbo hits boost it makes more power than the it takes. But until it does, you feel the power loss through 'lag', simple right? :D

If you had to choose which uses less power, that would be a turbo system which is why they make more horsepower per psi when compared to a supercharger.


There's probably a few technical errors in that logic, but you get the idea :wink:
