G'day all, Thought I would treat the LS and purchased a nice new Clarion system for approx $700 (incl install) from a well known local Alarm and Audio reseller. I have in the LS a brushed alloy dash with three holes for the oil pressure/amp/etc, and a slot to fit my new radio and two holes either end for the speakers. As most would know, not cheap at $475. I showed the bloke at the show room not to drill into the alloy dash and he advised not a problem they will screw from the back of the dash. Guess what, the b#st%^@s drilled four holes for each speaker into the alloy. They did not even pre drill the holes, so the alloy is raised/torn around each hole. You cannot see the holes unless you take the speakers off but I feel that is besides the point. So, here lies my dilemma:- • has anyone attached speakers without drilling holes into this sort of dash before. I personally cannot see it being that hard. • am I making too much of the situation. My wife tends too think I might be, but like everyone else, I am passionate about my Mini and want everything perfect. I have already called the Audio centre and have told them 'politely' I want it fixed. They reckon they will get a sheet of brush alloy and fix it (yeah right). Would like others thoughts, I'm am thinking about some sort of recourse for a new one, as they have openly admitted to the error. Knew I should have installed myself ! So, are you trying to mount speakers without drilling holes? Im a bit unsure of what you mean. |

No, I was advised that you can mount the speakers from the non alloy side of the dash (from behind, drilled into the wooden backing). I will post a picture a little later today. Cheers, Dave |

so you can't see the damage with the speakers fitted, so did you remove the speakers to check for damage, mate when you find a way of fitting speakers that does not involve drilling holes to mount them please let us all know how its done |

Ah ok, yes thats probably possible to mount from behind provided theres enought meat so the screws dont bust through, but how would the speaker grille be attached? Some of them twist onto the speaker frame, others use the mounting screws through the grille then through the speaker frame into the mounting section. |

I don't think you are expecting too much. You told them to mount them to the underside of the dash so they didn't drill holes. If they were too dumb to listen to what you told them then that is their problem. My 2c. |

yeah I agree 100% with 1018cc, you have paid a profesional audio place for a profesional installation, and if you asked them specificly not to do it that way. Getting them to admit theyre mistake and getting them to fix it is a whole lot different though. Good luck mate hope its worked out! Cheers |

yes its possible... goes like this, araldite screw into place using a template from the back then attach speaker. or use velcro . . . . i've done it on mine it works quite well |

OK, here are some pics. When you look into the car when getting in both driver and passenger you can see from the pics the top screw. The more I think about it (as I cannot bring myself to look at it now) it looks like a crappy job as they do not even sit flush to the dash. Also they have been heavy handed on the tops of the screws as the phillips heads have been virtually destroyed. Down the track I will be buying better speakers, only hopefully the holes will line up with the current ones. Anyway, maybe I have been over reacting, but when you are forking out $700 you expect to be wowed, not feel, yeah they will do. Anyway, think I need to drown my sorrows with a few Pales. Dave, mate, I've just had a look at the pic's. That is a shocking job - even worse than what I was thinking. I would be expecting better for my folding stuff from a pro. That's why I go to a pro for something - because it will turn out better than if I did it. I'm not much into stereo's but even I reckon I could do a better install than that. That's ****ing shocking that PRO's did that to your dash - it doesn't even look like they took their time with it. Why didn't they just put some short self tappers into the wood? Mate, if I were you I'd be spewin'. At the end of the day they did something that you TOLD them not to do BEFORE they started doing the fitting. My 2c P.s. I reckon they probably got a newby to do that. |

i have the same speakers in my van ,unfortunately that is the only way to mount that type , still not a real good job of installation, would not be happy. had a well known auto accessory establishment install my vdo stacker unit in my other van ,stuck the stacker unit on the front of the engine box between the seats not impressed ,told them so ,answer was well were did you want it . under the middle seat like everyone else did . fitted it myself later like i should have done in the first place. probably done up with a power drill. |

EAB, have you got a pic of your dash, is it similar to mine? Would'nt mind showing it to these turkeys at the audio place as an example. I think the most annoying part is the fact that they said they can put the speakers in without drilling holes by securing them from the back of the dash. They could have also called me to say that they could not do it, as they had the car for a whole day and let me make the decision. The problem is that I picked the car up in the dark yesterday after work and so I could not see what they had done and how poorly they had done it. Obviously I handed over the money last night (bugga) Don't think I would be as pi#$ed off if they had a t least done a decent job and the speakers were flush to the dash. Not sure how I will go with these guys with getting this rectified but I can always tell them that I have not named them as yet on the web but it may accidentally slip out if not fixed. cheers, Dave. |

Thats a sh*t house job mate. How could the installer be happy with that himself? Ask him if he would be happy with that install in his car? |

Very rough and very disappointing. I would go back and ask them for an explanation and question the quality of the job and hint at a new dash like you are considering. If the management are happy to put work out like I would be surprised , I reckon it was a rush job by a noob as previously mentioned. Hope you get a speedy and fair resolution Matt |
