the car has been sitting for a week. When I started her up, there was a lot of white smoke. 
Not just a little bit of smoke I'm talking clouds of it. I ran it for a while and it cleared up, took about 3 min of running. let it sit for 3 days when I started it the same thing. If I reved it I put my self in a cloud Why does this happen and should I worry. If it need fixing how much would I be looking at? Thanks worried

+1 for the valve stem seals, mine did the exact same thing, when i was on my l's it would sit then when i started her up, plumes upon plumes of white smoke, new seals stopped all that, guides possibly aswell? |

hmm..how hard is it to change the valve stem seals? is it one of those things that once you get started you replace a whole bunch of stuff at the same time? |

Yep, it gets like that...you get all guilty when you look down the bores and see a tired old block...or you wiggle the valves in their guides once the springs are off... But it's not a difficult job given you have access to a valve spring compressor. Cheap these days (although a little dubious in quality) from Supercrap. It will perform the job however. The valve stem seals will come in the head gasket kit. |

valve stem seals are cheap, but you need to compress the combustion chamber first so teh valve doesnt fall out. |

May sound daft, but I had the same thing happen once and it was due to the dissy being out. Just check the timing before you go ripping the head orf! |

When you fill the cylinders with air, theres no need to rip the head off. |

No way I'd do mine with the head on- apart from the fact I use 180lb springs.... 
Putting valve stem seals on only is 1/2 a job- I betcha if it's smoky, the guides are worn, probably valve stems too. Pull the head, and make a proper job of it.

Anyone got a picture of what the valve stem seals look like, or even better a picture of where they go?. Im thinking of having a go at fixing this my self but dont have a good enough pick in my books I've only just got the car, I replaced the spark plugs and oil, All to specs could this have anything to do with it? |

I've only just got the car, I replaced the spark plugs and oil, All to specs could this have anything to do with it? take it to Matt Read (or someone) and get him to do it, and to tune it up properly and make sure everything is right, or in a 'known' state if you're not sure what a stem seal looks like, chances are you won't be game to change them when you find out

I have a spare 1000 motor here so I was going to use that as a dummy and see how I go. I'm would like to learn how to do it tho because one day Matt and others wont be here ,
But I know what your saying. I think I'll pay someone and watch and learn that way

I cant see why you cant change them yourself. But the chances are the head is going to needs some TLC and unfortunately that is a specialist job. Dont attempt to do them when they are on the car, thats only going to cause my trouble and will take just as long. Getting the head off will take less than hour so you may aswell just pull it off. Maybe strip it all down and get Mad Matt or someone to look over it for you. Watching someone assemble it will give you the best idea and then next time you can assemble it all yourself. Matt |

You said white smoke, is it white smoke or blue smoke there may be nothing more than a little water burning out of the exhaust if it is white |
