Post subject:  Starting from cold

Greetings fellow Mini-ites. I've got a bit of a problem that someone may have a cure for. Gotta 1293 with flat top pistons, road cam, used to go like a rocket with a DHLA Dellorto 40 . Made lots of noise and consumed vast amounts of fuel. So I've put on a pair of inch and a quarter SU's, new needles, Cooper s spec, new main jets, new needle valves in the floatchambers, on standard inlet manifold. The choke cable drops the main jets down to its stop when I pull it out. The problem is to start it from cold I have to take the aircleaner off and pour petrol down the carbs 2 or 3 times before it will stay running with the choke on. After this it starts fine untill the next cold start. The float chambers have plenty of fuel in them. Someone has bored the crap out of the inlet ports to match the Dellorto manifold, I'm thinkin maybe flow characteristics have been screwed so much it needs mega fuel from cold, I dunno.........
Thanks. :)

I'd say either the float levels are too low, or the jets need screwing down heaps to make it richer.
The porting it has won't affect the starting.

What needles are in it....??

Hi Kevin, needles are M,jets are roughly 2.5 turns down, float chambers over half full when I take the lid off. I'll try winding the jets down more, see what happens. Cheers.
