Been pondering this while pulling my Deluxe apart and seeing MOWOG stamped on everything. I've done the odd search and I can't believe that there isn't a definitive consistent answer. Actually given the history of the Mini I guess it isn't that surprising after all.... |

Yes , what Simon said , this comes up often and there are many rumours about what it means but according to several books I have here including the mini bible "the mini story" by Laurence Pomeroy state it is MOrris WOlseley Garages . |

MOrris WOlseley MG is the most likely version. There was no such thing as Wolseley Garages and MG stands for Morris Garage so the G would refer to MG. Lucky that when they came up with MOWOG they hadn't yet taken over Riley. ![]() |

isnt there a story about how someone high up in mossis/austin/bmc was in africa having car problems, and the local natives were coming to have a look, and when they opened up the engine the locals started chanting "mowog" because that's what they say when they open an animal??? |

MOWOG is MOrris WOlseley Group. Morris bought Wolseley in 1926 and used it to supply engines and gearboxes for Morris and MG models as well as produce its own cars. Riley wasn't acquired until 1939. |

I always remember MOWOG as the name of the silverback gorilla employed at BMC to tighten all the nuts and bolts up so that us mere mortals can never get them undone ever again... An oldie but a goodie hooroo |
