Post subject:  Market value for a Motorkhana/Targa Rally Mini

Hi all,

I'm new here and am interested in getting into rallysports such as motorkhanas with the MCC and eventually doing the Targa Tasmania in a Mini.

I was wondering if I were to be looking for an unregistered Mini with a view to entering it into motorkhanas, what kind of condition/price range am I looking at?

I know this is a very open ended question, but I'd like some ideas getting into the sport, and particularly, into a Mini.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy, firstly can you put your location in your profile, knowing where you are is a big help, i do know of a cheap car that already has some club motorkhana cred, as for doing targa tassie then you are talking huge dollars, everything needs to be FIA approved, such as roll cages, seat, harnesses, driving suits etc etc, plus you can't show up with a old clunker & expect to get a start.

If your new to mini's/motorsport join your local mini club & start doing motorkhana's there, MCCNSW has a club khana this Sunday (in Sydney)
then move up to khanacross, lap dashes, supersprints get a fell for them then move onto rallies.

Hi Andy,

Your Mini will not have to be built to FIA Standards.

your best bet to to contact the Confederation of Australian Motor Sports or CAMS Australias governing body of motor sports

Depending on its age is to how its to be built. My Mini is July 1971 so it built to class Nc.

CAMS has a office in each state and National office is in Melbourne. You can contact them at www.cams.com.au and follow the historic link

Or contact your local race track or club that runs the events you wish to compete.

Thanks

Also Andy,

If you are goint to compete in motor sports events you must be a member of a CAMS Accredited Club.

You can also find them listed on the web site.

Have a look at the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA site www.vsccwa.com.au some info and pics.

Some classes dont need race suits or roll bars.

Targa Tasmania is now operated by AASA.

So, you wilkl have to abide by their rules and regulations.

Thanks for your help on the Targa rules, but I still would like some advice on how much Mini I could get for what kind of money.

For example, say I have a budget of around $3000, what kind of condition would I be looking at?

Cheers,

Andy

id say for 3k youd get a average motorkhana car.

you'll be looking at some more serious money as you progress further.

Try and avoid CAMS if you can. (it is very hard I know)

CAMS think that they control motorsport in Australia and a lot of people think that "you must" be in a CAMS affiliated club but this is not true.

CAMS only role is to take as much money as possible while giving very little in return.

Morris,

Over the two weeks Ive been a member of this forum Ive not seen you have any thing nice to say about any one or any thing.

Is it because you live in country NSW and have nothing else to do.

All our events in Perth are run by CAMS clubs....Except one event series but there is no insurance each enterent must have $10,000 public liability Insurance

What happens in Perth is not what is happening in the rest of Australia.

Umm , Shane , as a new member it may help to sit back and read what goes on for a while before making comments like that about existing members . As most members who've been here a while will know Morris1100 has a lengthy racing history (including bathurst so not just club level) and also has a long running beef with CAMS over what he (and others) see as their interest in profiteering over quality . Just take some time to get to know where people are coming from .

Morris is always happy to offer advice and his long experience to others. He has always seemed to be good people to me.

We all have issues that we feel strongly about that others would disagree with (god knows I can be controversial) Time for a group hug everyone!!!

Morris is a great bloke from what I have read, and I respect him greatly even though I have not met the man himself. He's also got a great sense of humor too.

Don't bite the hand that feeds, if you do, you will start to find that your threads don't get answered after time.
