Post subject:  peoples opinion
i want to know peoples opinion on....i am currently coming to the completion of my mini being restored and am looking at getting a blueslip my dad says i should take it for a drive before i go for blue slip to see how it goes and if theres any problems oil leaks etc.. i want to know what other people do and what people think i should do.........thanks alot

In Qld you can go to the DOT to get a permit to drive an unregistered vehicle. Probably be a good idea to try and get something like that. Take it for a decent drive and see how it goes.

down here in nsw, i think the only way you can drive an unregistered vehicle is by driving it straight to and from a blue slip mechanic.

In NSW you need a pink slip to get an unregistered vehicle permit.
They say that an unregistered vehicle has to be safe. :lol:

If you drive your car around before the blue slip and the police stop you you will be booked for "Drive unregistered vehicle" "Drive uninsured vehicle" and what ever else they can find.

If you run into someone during this drive and hurt someone you will be up for all the medical bills of the person you hurt as well as all the other things.

It is not a good idea to drive unregistered vehicles on the street.

In nsw it is legal to drive the car for any purpose related to the registration process but must be by the most direct route. This includes

Pink/Blue slip station
Police (I.D. check on engine number if req'd)
Green Slip
RTA
Mechanic.

You get this info in a letter when your car runs out of rego generally.

I have also been told it is ok to do a test drive near home to check brakes etc.

This doesn't mean you are insured so its always advisable to tow the car rather than have to fork out cash in case of an accident. When I go for blue slips I normally have someone in one of my other cars in front of me so I hit them rather than someone else :lol:

If you are not sure, ring the local police as they will be the ones fining you!

Carter,

As most have said, you can drive the car "For the purposes of obtaining registration". This may include but is not limited to,

Going to Mechanic to obtain Blue/ Pink Slip

Obtaining a Green Slip,

Attending the RTA,

Nowhere does the legislation give you the authority to take the car for a test drive to see if it runs ok. Ultimately this is what the inspection station Pink/ Blue slip will tell you. If your car is not up to speed and fails the inspection then at least you will know what needs to be repaired without the risk of VERY large fines and or injuring yourself or someone else.

My Mum is a Police Officer in this fine state of NSW. When she was on general duties, she said pulling over a unregistered car was usually hitting the trifecta.

1. Driving Unregistered Vehicle
2. Driving Uninsured Vehicle (Compulsory Third Party, or Greenslip)
3. Driving Unlicensed (As more often than not, the driver of an unregistered car is either on their L's or driving with a suspended/restricted license)

So unless you are driving your unregistered vehicle to a Mechanic or to the RTA, you can be in for some serious fines.

If the plates were not previously registered to that vehicle VIN number - yes.

Daniel is right about NSW, I had to get mine registered after being out of rego 3 months (no blueslip though - that was last time haha)
You can take to RTA, etc according to the letter they send you... but dont stuff around 'test driving' as thats not part of the rules.

Take it to get the slips, on the way there you will work out anything wrong with it... otherwise tow it to a track somewhere and test all you like.

I know people who have been killed by unrego'd cars, they were not readworthy and the excuse was 'we were testing' before we took to mechanic/rego... not saying your will hurt someone, but saying if you need to 'test' things, do it properly somewhere safe.

Maybe a squirt up and down your own street (50-100m) might tell you if its working ok... but anymore than that - dunno EDIT Provided you don't live on Parramatta Road

yea i know a few people with big properties as i live in the country and was just going to go out there or go out to the back roads(dirt roads) where no one hangs about.......
