Well I picked up Maggie this morning from the car freighters at Moorebank this morning.

They called me the night prior and told me during transit the fuel line had split open.

So I rock up with some spare fuel hose and some tools. The battery box was 3/4 full of fuel and it was puddled all through the boot. No problem, battery out and started bailing. Luckily break in the ine was right neaar the tank and I only had to chop out 2 cm of hose.

Got into the car and the cabin stunk of fuel. Look under the back seat.....

Yep fuel everywhere. I've scrapped off all the rubberish stuff that was turned into mush and Maggie is now airing out.



Anyone have any idea how to minimise the damage to the rear seat from the fuel or am I better off getting another?



BTW I've found an even better use for nappies, soaking up fuel. 15mins with a couple of nappies and the boot well was bone dry!!!!

can a transport company do anything without breaking something?

I'd get another seat. If someone farts on it the friction will blow the car up!

I'd also be replacing all of the fuel hose, not just the bit near the tank.




So, less irritation to the skin too?

Yeah, I am going to replace it, just did enough to get me home from the depot.

I am sure that these companies have an insurance that you can make a claim on. They should not be operating if Uninsured. That is claimable Damage. Try them.

I'm not sure it would wash with them on this one, the damage was internal to the car and probably not caused by anything they tied the car down or how the vehicle was transported. Further, if there was something in the boot that caused the damage, they technically don't allow anything to be carried in the boot or interior of the car during transit (except for the spare tyre, jack etc) for this reason, you sign off that the car is empty in the handover. Any damage caused by stuff in the boot would not be covered.

Not being negative, I get to deal with these turkeys quite often and have worked out what washes in claims and what does not...

A friend of mine had his Valiant bent in the middle like a banana however. That certainly was claimable

EDIT: Maybe check to see that the fuel hose from the tank through the boot floor wasn't wrenched out by some protrusion on the company's trailer, maybe it pulled on the hose causing it to split. Prove that and you have a new interior

I think just be happy that the fuel didn't splash around enough to start a fire off the battery! If a wet seat is all that you got out of it, dont complain that the problem happened, be glad that it didn't happen later.

I'm sure the company that sold you the car will send you a new seat.

You could probably sell the seat reminents on ebay, the petrol would mae it worth something!
(isn't fuel + foam = napalm?)

I dunno, but I reckon at the price of petrol this week I would be squeezing it out of the foam and filtering it back into the tank
