Post subject:  spring coil/cone conversion
anyone had any experience with these? I am restoring my van and will replace the rubber cones. while I am at it. Was thinking about getting these as they are meant to last longer and offer a better ride?

Any thoughts? Yay's or nay's?

Deffently Nay, i have had experiance with them and they were a total wast of money and very dangerious in my opinion. I had the red springs which i think are road/race, they colapsed in 2 weeks of having them on my car, the rears could fall out if the weight was taken off the rear (so jacking the car up or 3 wheeling while corning etc) also the fronts would move out of position all the time.... What can i say but crap....

Surely they do not fall out when wheel lifts ! I am sure they would have been tested for that before put on nthe market. Are you sure yo do not have something Missing in your setup ? Like a travel restricter or something to the effect ? Are your shocks the correct sort to go with these springs ?

A lot of people run them in the UK and say they offer a much better ride to rubber cones. Some have had the same problem with them popping out so they just wrap a single zip tie around them to hold them in place which apparently works really well

Our 77 Clubby 1412 stroker van is going hydrolastic, with shocks on front and comp rear bumpstops. 8)
I want a civilised ride, with no zipties required. :P
No hydro displacer replacement probs, I have about 12 spares... 8)

IMO a spring with less than 2 full working coils is not a spring... :lol:

Why anyone, other than a racer, would want linear rate springing in a light car confuses the crap out of me. Add 4 people to a mini and you add 50-60% of its mass. The rubber cones were designed so that at light load they were in a softer zone and at heavy load they were stiffer and you don't crash into bump stops all day.

Those coils may be great with one person in the car but they would be crap with any load.

They would do a much better job with a stack of belleville washers on a rod. :lol:

well I guess that is a resounding NO then.

I will just get new cones and hi lo's

Have any of you used the cones that are coming out of india now? I might try to get the dunlop ones as they are original and I read on the minispares website that the indian ones use a different rubber that does not react the same to bumps and jolts as the old ones.
