Post subject:  Tacho wiring
Ok here's the deal. I want to get my orig tacho back up and going instead of the big monstrousity down by my left knee. What I need to know is what original coloured wires go where?!

From the big tacho there are 4 wires (black, green, red, white) connected. The black is earthed. The green connects to a white cable with a black stripe. The red AND white cables both connect to a single red one which then connects to the back of the cluster (where a brown cable is connected in the picture below). Does anyone have a wiring diagram or a picture of theirs?

PS - Isn't wireless great?! I'm sitting outside my house (no garage :cry: ) under an umbrella doing all this on a laptop :D

Generally with all aftermarket tachos, black is gnd, red is wired to switched 12v acc, white goes to 12v switched from your lights, and green goes to the neg side of the coil. As 4 your setup i dunno!!

Yeah well I guessed those things. The orange light on the tacho was always on so that's why the red and white cables both went into one. It's just trying to find out what goes where on the orig Smiths tacho.

BTW: the cluster in the pic is a spare/buggered one.

Anyone got a pic of theirs?

Mines a Kmart brand but also has the same 4 wires. I havent worked out the correct way to wire it yet either, but the auto sparky will be doing that as soon as I can get my new indicator stalk and headlight switch.. oh and the alternator fixed, again.. then he will sort the tacho :)

I'll let you know if you havent sorted it by then, yours might be the same

I put in one of the smiths tachos put it was the type shown in the picture (you want to get rid of that right)
Anyway there was two round conecters joined to each other just behind my dash (it goes through the ignition).
They are white wires these connect to the appropriate connectors on the tacho the other 2 are earth and power (I had no earth on mine but I took the back cover off and it was pretty obvious which was the earth) as for the lights (when the headlights are on) I just put in some wires from the similar lights on the 2 pod dash. :idea:
I think I have probably answered the wrong question but it might help... :oops:
Do the 3 pod dashes as came off the GTs and 1275LSs have a different type tach and wiring. :?:
Oh by the way my tacho seems to work OK with the pulsar dizzy. :D

I want to actually start USING the smiths tacho and get rid of the big one attached to the steering column.

Oh it makes sense now, I thought you meant by your left knee as you were taking the photo (silly I know) :oops:

the two round connectors are the signal to / from the distributor (what the tacho counts) my minis had these there already try to find them and they simply plug in. One side should come from the ignition the other presumably goes to the distributor they are white wires (might be a trace but mostly white) they are connected together by two black connectors you'll know the ones because if you disconnect they and try to start the car it won't go (no signal to / from the distributor)

On mine where there is the screw (next to the other electrical connections it is connected to printed circuit in your photo) I connected this up as an earth (mine didn't have one for some reason) if you take the plastic cover off it is the only place the tacho can earth. The other connection is power I used the switched power from the ignition cause I didn't want power going in there all the time in case it might frazzle something.

That should do it the lights I just put in a couple of bits of wire to grab power from the rest of my dash but it looks like you have a printed circuit thing that is meant for a three pod dash.

Your old tacho (the big one) may use a different system so I think I would ignore that for a bit.

Just run a wire from neg side of coil straight to sense plug on tacho, aready has earth from volt reg and the loose(brown or blue) wire on at the back of the fuel/temp gauge runs power for tacho.

Bugger, mine had two of those round type connectors one male the other female so it looks as though I might not be too much use...
The other two are power and earth, do as deluxe 68 said for the signal. I don't know :?
It sounds like the green wire (connecting to white and black) is the signal on the monstrosity so try connecting that up to the round connector maybe... Just guessing

Thanks... I was just thinking that is all that's needed from the pic that fuzzy posted. Will try/test it in the next day or so.

Im with you Marvin, all of my nice mini's have ALL Smiths gauges, our "grunter " motorsport car has all VDO there a nice gauge aswell.
