Post subject:  Bottom of Cam Lobe???

Guy's.... Slidey has developed loose tappets, my question is, how do i know that cam is at the bottom of it's lobe when setting the clearance ???? and what should i be looking at????. I was out today and suddenly there was a lot of tappet noise from under the bonnet. :( ..... so i assume that it is the tappets that have loosened.

You use the "rule of nine"
Adjust valve no 1 when valve no 8 is fully open (1+8=9)
" " no 2 " " no 7 " (2+7=9)
" " no 3 " " no 6 " (3+6=9)

You get the idea!

Guys thanks for the help. I know the guide 1 when 8 is open etc 2 when 7 is open.......... what i want to know is there a way to know when u are on the bottom of the cam lobe...... can you feel it whilst rocking the car in gear?????
I tried it, thought i had it right but did not have the confidence to go and start adjusting and get it real wrong and break some rockers

if No1 one is rocking... ie exhaust is closing at the end of exhaust stroke, and inlet is starting to open for the inlet stroke, then its opposite piston (the other one at the top) must be 180 degs away from it. this one is safe to adjust as neither valve is going to do anything. it is in the firing position end of compression stroke and begining of power stroke, so the rotor arm on the dizzy should be pointing to this cylinders spark plug.
same applies to each of the paired positioned cylinders..
thats the way i got taught anyways

dont tighten the tappets until theyre silent
mine were silent and although i got many a compliment about a quiet car
they were slowly bashing a hole into the cam followers

noisy tappets are good
