looking at getting my blue slip done in the next few weeks and was wondering do you need a wiper bottle the one that squirts water on your windscreen to pass? and is there anything i should take extra care in double checking or what eva so far ive got to get a battery cover and a battery holder...... anything else that is easily looked over??

Basically it has to be road legal and have all the things working it came with originally (seatbelts , horn , wipers , washers , reversing lights if it had them etc ) so yes you'll need a working windscreen washer . the main thing I've found is to make sure it's clean and presentable as well , you can or most likely will be knocked back for oil leaks or evidence of old oil leaks so make sure you degrease your engine bay before going and vacuum the interior , wash the outside if you can (water restrictions out there ?) too .

make sure that they can easily identify the car. with my 850 the guy spent about four hours trying to confirm which number he was supposed to put on the blue slip, then tried to tell me that the seat belts needed an engineering certificate.

I have had a few cars blue slipped now and I can only add what others have already said. Firstly the car has to be mechanically right.The do check the obvious things - rust, brakes, leaks and the identification.

But presentation is everything - if the inspector hops into a clean, fresh smelling well looked after car then he usually wont go looking for faults to knock you back on - PROVIDED - its mechanically okay in the first place.

So take out any old cola cans, ciggy butts and rubbish - give the interior a good clean and sruce it up. Wash and polish it and also make the glass clean - crystal clear clean inside and out. Get a tyre polish and clean the tyres - make it look like its a car on a used car lot.

But dont be frustrated if the car does have faults - dont argue with the inspector, just go home and fix the things he has faulted. The inspector has a duty to ensure the car is roadworthy and mostly they are not out to get old cars off the road - just simply make sure the ones on the road are safe.

If you havn't driven the car yet its almost worth hiring a trailer and taking out to a quiet sealed road somewhere to drive it to see what what faults it may have. No point in the inspector standing on he brakes with his meter if its going to spin because of badly adjusted or unbedded brakes.

Or - having the exhaust come undone over the first couple of gearchanges or bumps.

But presentation is 50% of the inspectors first impressions
