Post subject: | Classic Mini Magazines |
In the UK Retro Cars magazine has been re-launched with a new owner focusing on modified classic cars from the 1960s to 1990s. IMO Mini Magazine seems to be going from strength to strength with high quality features and technical articles. It seems to be concentrating on A series powered cars rather than anything with a foreign engine fitted. When it first came out in the mid 90s it was by far the superior Mini publication. It later dropped off a bit but now has bounced back with a vengance. Just as well because it's not cheap to buy, but at least it provides a valuable reading experience. Mini World on the other hand, seems to be going through a bit of a down time. Boring features, too much emphasis on UK club events, and Tim Mundy's technical features are shallow, superficial and sometimes provide quite incorrect or misleading information (unlike Calver's). The emphasis is on stories about non-A series cars, which they claim sells more magazines. Or it used to, because according to Mini Magazine the pendulum is swinging back the other way with a revival of interest in tuning the old A series and more developments being done, especially forced induction alternatives. Of course nothing can compare to our own Mini Experience for quality articles about homegrown Mini matters. Pity the Japanese Mini mag isn't available in English as I'm sure that would have some sensational cars and products featured. |

I quite like Retro Cars, a lot of the articles give you ideas for other mods etc and it's generally a good read. I too can't really get too excited about "foreign" engines in a mini, but I respect those who like a challenge. Calver is the man, though and when I get too many magazine, I generally cut out the tech articles and recycle the rest. It's built to a handy resource for various tasks. |
