Post subject:  noisy lifter?

I have a 998 A+ and has just gained a noisy lifter I think.
When you first start it up it is fine, then about 5-10 seconds later you can hear it start to go for its life.
When the thermostat opens up it quietens down to what it should be.
Is this anything to worry about?
Is there anything I should or do to fix it?
Have rechecked valve clearances and they are set correctly.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers Pete

Sounds nasty :? ....

Might need a bit more of a localized sound check. Lift the rocker cover off and see that it isn't a rocker on a worn shaft.
If it's internal use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope and try to chase the noise down on the block to a particular cylinder or area.

Might need a little more information..a check of valve clearances wouldn't go astray either..

The noise is coming from the tappet chest behind No 1 cylinder.
I have checked valve clearences they are all good.
Has me stumped as when the motor warms up the noise virtually disappears.

A bit of work involved in getting the cover off too, but at least it only needs two gaskets...might have to dive in for a look?

Not saying this is it but a maybe. When I stripped my motor down I had a devil of a time getting the cam out because the centre cam bearing had moved about a cm out of the web and it had been clipped by the cam follower and bent a tongue up till it was out of the way ( or maybe it still hit - I don't know , never heard it running)

Does the noise get worse when you increase the rpm (hammering, tapping or a rattling type sound?)
 I'd recommend doing a compression test as it may be a stuffed head gasket.
 Check the distance the rockers are moving as it could also be worn lobe on the camshaft.
 Could even be the timing chain rattling/loose so check the timing as the mark will be jumping around.

My 5 cents worth.......good luck, hope you find the problem
