hi sorry to start a new thread about this

ok just tried to get the new car going...

got as far as taking out plugs and removing the coil lead, and tried turning her over but no oil pressure.. well the oil pressure light didnt go out.. had it on the starter for about 30 seconds..

I dont want to do it more than that incase i damage something? is that likely?

should I try prime the oil pump? how do I do this while the engine is in the car?

thanks for help!!

keep kicking it over, if it`s sat that long then it will take a while

how much oil is in it???

Did it used to run as it is or has it been pulled down & re-built?

what`s the whole story???

used to run fine.. been rebuilt, done about 2000kms then left for ~4 years. plenty of oil in it, and the oil looks decent... I can change the oil in the morning if it is likely to help at all?

cranking it for longer - is that likely to cause any damage (other than a flat battery!)? will have to jump it off the other car i think...

had a crapper of an afternoon. left work early as I'm sick. thought I migh be able to start on the mini, forgot I had to go to the vets to pick up some tablets for the dog, drove all the way back to the vet, then home, then tried to start it... no oil pressure... came inside to read about priming oil pumps.. went back outside.. sh*t locked allll my keys in the house.. wait outside in the cold for half an hour until my missus come home... then it was dark. will try again tomorrow!

thanks!

Best you charge the battery and or hook up a jumper battery/car. Does the oil filter have any oil in it? Check under the oil cap for any signs of oil in and around the rocker gear? Is the oil in it thick like maple syrup or honey?
Sometimes an engine can take a few minutes to "prime" with oil. Just keep cranking it, if it hasnt primed up within say 4-5 mins of cranking the oil maybe the problem or there is another problem such as a stuffed oil pump, etc.....
If the gauge and light are stuffed(?) - the cranking sound will change when it has oil pressure (loaded/slower/deeper sound)
Anyways good luck

yep will hook up the other car in the morning.. its prob 5 degrees out now max..

all I really want to know is that cranking the engine for that long wont cause any damage...

I'll change the oil first thing in the morning.. just to be sure the stuff that is in it isn't too thin..

I got a bottle of KMX 20W/50 from Kmart.. also the only oil filter I could find was a Z418 ryco.. is this likely to be the correct oil filter for a spin on type?

the one on it currently is a unipart GFE466

5L is fine, will do engine + filter

Old oil is unlikely to be too thin, it's usually like tar!

well I found a thread which said 4.83 including oil filter.. so put about that in..

cranked for around 3 minutes ... oil pressure light still didnt come off..

this is with plugs out..

is there any other easy way to check if I have oil pressure? am I meant to be doing this with plugs out?

It will spin much easier with the plugs out.

To check for oil pressure you could pull out the oil light sender unit and see if oil comes out when you spin the engine.

If the car has sat for a while it may have an air-lock in the oil pump and it will not pump any oil.
Remove the big pipe from the oil filter to the block where it meets the block.
Add oil into the oil gallery in the block (I use an oil can), this will run in to the oil pump and prime it.
Then spin the motor until it starts coming out of the block.
Refit the pipe and spin it again and see if the light goes out.

that's what i've already done.. mini has started and has been driven!

had to reverse prime the pump, then got oil pressure straight away.

splash of fuel in the carby, and she started quite easily. bit rough for a while, but now it runs ok :)
