Post subject:  Need some tips 4 buying a mini

Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I am thinking of buying an old mini. is there anything I need to be aware and check when i have the inspection?

Body?
Rust?
Mechanical?
WhIch Part?
Identify the model?

Any links that you can point me to have a read through?

Thanks in advance!

basically unless the mini has had a full restoration it will have rust in areas. Most common on clubmans (square front) is in the foot wells and boot wells. Lift up the front carpets and have a look under for holes, take spare out and have a look for more.

You can pick up a nice clubman (1971-on) for around 5-6 grand that will not have to be worked on, anything for around the 2-3 grand mark usually (there are exceptions) need abit of work.

Take it for a drive, make sure the steering feels tight, brakes work without pumping the pedal and the motor runs fine. Most smoke a little, but alot of smoke will mean a tied motor. Most cheaper minis have sloppy gear sticks so that is normal. Preferably get one that has just passed rego, or get an inspection before handing over your cash.

Thanks Brad,

I will have a look at those carefully.

Is that expensive to convert a mini to a unleaded engine? or is that worth it?

It's not expensive to convert. Just got to put hardened valve seats in.
Worth doing if you've got the head off anyway, not worth doing if not.
Just put lead additive replacement type stuff in.
Good luck with the hunt!

Remember...don't buy the first one you look at just on emotion...

yeah
drive the mini

make sure the brakes don't pull to one side
it drives straight (enough) without your hand on the wheel
doesnt make a banging sound when you back off the throttle
do a Uturn with the steering wheel on full lock accelerate through and listen for clicking sounds
doesnt squeak when you go over bumps

Mine does that, its just the engine mounts that makes it do that isn't it??
or is it something more sinister???

there are many causes:
top engine mounts
bottom engine mounts
gearstick ball loose in the cup
gearstick bracket
exhaust hitting the body
