Paint everything before the engine goes back in, and hide as much of the wiring as possible

Not the best shot but you get what I mean:

lol. 8)

Again, not exactly what you're after, but look at engine bays that look good, no matter what car, and try to use the ideas on yours.

IMHO:
Don't use too much/many colour(s). Mainly black & silver/chrome is the best I think, with a sprinkling of a brighter colour that contrasts with your exterior paint. I think this is the key whether its engine bay, interior, exterior, etc.

Also cover or hide all your wiring. nothing brings down the appearance of an otherwise nice engine bay than seeing an exposed multi coloured loom.

In my opinion hiding your wiring makes about as much sense as hiding your carbies or even the coil. Why not even cover the block with plastic while your at it. Without the wiring, the whole thing is just a cast iron lump that isnt moving anywhere in a hurry. By all means keep it neat but don't go to extremes.
But if you really wanted that super clean engine bay, why not run the motor on detergent. That way any leaks clean themselves! :P :P
