g'day today i was turning over my car and all of a sudden a heap of oil started leaking from somewheere and i wiped it up and was trying to look where the leak was coming from and i couldnt see where it ewas coming from then it seemed to stop leaking and iput a piece of cardboard under neath and checked about 10 mins later and theres oil there and i have no idea where it is coming from my best idea is from the unis? is this possible if so is it a hard fix? can you do it with the motor in? cause i need it fixed cause i have my car booked in for blue slip for monday.........and there is no way it will pass with a leak like that..... thanks a lot fellas |

You have got t get under there and chase the oil back to it's source. The fresh wet stuff will guide you to where it came from, follow it with your finger.. If it is the uni seals, then yes they can be done in the car in a couple of hours (with the right size Socket). Take the old seals out and roll down to CBC or another bearing supplier for a exact replacement. They're about 5 bucks each and pretty generic. |

From the sounds of it, oil really pours out when it's running then stops when the engine is turned off (apart from a few drips from the already escaped oil)? Timing cover crank seal. Can do this in the car too. |

Some other areas it could be leaking from are........has your engine got tapet chest covers on the back of the engine or mechanical fuel pump? Could even be the rocker cover gasket oushed in at the back so its not sealing and oil running down the back of the engine. Is it leaking out of the clutch end of the engine....could be the primary gear seal on the clutch housing due to positive crank case presure build up due to engine not being able to "breath" properly. If it was leaking from the drive flange/uni seals it would still drip after the engine has stopped running. |

I recently had the same trouble. Turned out to be a split in the oil pressure gauge line. Something else to check.... |

ummmm...... yea it seems to only l;eak when im turning my car over. i hope it isnt somthing seriouse as i have myc ar booked in for blue slip on monday. it is leaking to bad to pass blue slip though |

i have been under there and looked but cannot see where it is coming from the only place i can see oil on is the thing that comes off the gear box that joins to my rubber cross then onto my drive shaft.....but other then that i cannot see any oil anywhere else.... so that is why i think it is coming from there..... do you need to drain the oil to fix this? |

I can say with absoloute certainty that the oil leak is coming from your engine/gbox/diff. |

Yeah, if it is the driveshaft output seals that need to be changed, the oil needs to be dropped. If you clean all the oil and dirt away and then drive it you should be able to see the track from the fresh oil. |

If the sidecover bushes are worn bad, the new seals won't last too long. Tug up and down on the drive flanges, if you can feel slop there it needs new bushes (which have to be machined to size after fitting). Or, go fit another pair of side covers with better bushes.

which is the easiest to fix? the car doesnt even run yet......and it only seems to leak when you turn it over..... |
