Post subject:  Attention JAM: Clear Coat on wheels

Anton,

I tried to call you yesterday about advice on painting (since you are the resident god of all things paint). I have done my wheels in 2 x etch primer then 3 x acrylic touch up paint (fron supercheap, the expensive type, $21 per can). It looks good (piccies in the New Wheels thread).

My question is should I do a clear coat or two? if so do I need to buy the same brand paint as the touchup paint that I have or will any acrylic clear coat do? any other tips or what I need to look out for? how many coats?

Cheers mate!
:D

OK..I had a look at the piccies....very 8) nice mate. I love white wheels on red cars!

IMHO, you only NEED to clear coat a metallic base. I don't use clear coat very much.....I have done in the past, over metallics, but not over non metallic base.

Some say you need to clear everything, but then again, some say that Casey Donovan has talent!

In your case, I WOULD clear coat them. Wheels get knocked around, so think of it as added protection! If you can buy the same brand and type of clear paint, do it! Mixing up brands and types of paint is a big NO NO. Always use the same brand from primer to colour.

I have recently learnt the benifits of painting 2 pack. That would have been great for your wheels, but that is another topic maybe......

Regards,

Your humble paint advisor.
