Post subject:  Help Needed Urgently!

Hey Guys,

The camshaft pulley bolt is rooted and i am trying to remove the other one from another spare engine I have. Can anyone tell me how to remove the camshaft pulley securing bolt? I need to have my car fixed and running by tommorrow arvo :( Do i need any special tools?

It would be good if some could even give me a link that will show me how to do it :)

If by saying cam shaft pulley you mean the pulley attached to the crank which connects to the cam shaft by a chain, then you will need to knock back the metal locking tab and the lock the engine so that you can use a breaker bar on it. If it is the cam sahft retaining nut (inside the timing chain housing) you mean it is the same process. I did this myself not that long ago, you should be able to undo it yourself, but you need to lock it up first. A screwdriver or crank bearing in the flywheel will do the trick. Hopefully this will make sense?

Cheers

The tab is bent up the side of the big nut....something like the turned up brim of a soldiers slouch hat. Get a screwdriver between the nut and the tab and lightly hammer down to lever the tab away from the nut. Carefully hammer the outer extremity of the tab flat once you have prised it away from the nut to alllow the nut to turn.

A breaker bar is a big long bar the hangs of the end of a big socket (usuall a 1/2 inch drive)....optional extras are foot pegs!! (joking)

Go to a secondhand building material yard and pick up a metre or so of 3/4 old galv pipe. I have an old sidchrome tool "handle" about 1 foot long that takes a 1/2 socket each end - one end has a right angle bend The galv pipe slips over the long end nicely and gives considerable leverage

You also will need to stop the engine turning over while you undo the bolt. If the gearbox is still on it, you can put a big screwdriver or breaker bar in the starter hole to hold the flywheel ring gear. Or put an old main bearing shell in there, that will lock the ring gear nicely.

If motor is off the gearbox, a big block of wood between the crank and side of block will do it.

My old man swears by old valiant torsion bars to make breakers.
Although he is a diesel mechanic, so probably has to deal with bigger nuts than most

It'll go trust me, you just need to get good leverage, i am 110kgs so i can do it myself. Someone smaller may have problems. A rattle gun wont do it either, unless you have a very very good one with huge torque. Weight is all you need. If i was up that way i would come roud and show you how a fat guy can break it no problems. Call a couple of the boys around, you'll be right

Cheers

Which way you trying to turn it....sometimes a little bit of both ways helps to crack a tight nut :!:
