I'm just curious as to what brake setups people use on their turbo/supercharged minis? Also what do people recommended?

My car is std weight so has std (Cooper S that is) brakes. The pads are a competition grade atm, but for the street I use std.

Some people always argue about brakes, to me me it's a road car and the speed limit is 110km/hr.

If you race on the track it's a different story. I can only go from 0-160-0 twice (ie accelerate to 160, then brake hard to stop) before I lose the brakes, so the car will easily do one emergency stop from 110.

For a serious track car I would consider the 4 spot calipers and vented discs from the motherland.

i agree with all the above. id suggest atleast disks. i have an 1275 with an sc12 running twin cylinder front drums they are good but not as good as disks by a long shot and no good for racing as they fade. braking is ok but if u try to stop hard u wont feel as safe as with disks.

That is just scary  and I would recomend you upgrading to 7.5 Disc real soon

the twin cylinder front are the last ones before disks right i didnt just accidently say i have those early (really really) bad ones did i? yeah im getting to the disk upgrade i dont drive any different with the new engine and charger then i did with the 1100 but still going to do the disks asap untill then no circuits for me and 4 second gaps in all traffic. the drums are also reco in perfect condition with a really hard pedal, so u dont have that please stop please stop please stop feeling.

good twin cylinder drums stop better then the 7.5's on meeni and as good as the metro turbo 4 pots on the race car.. but theyle only do it once :)

IMO you can never spend too much or go too big when it comes to brakes.
It's not speeding that kills you, it's not being able to stop as fast as you'd like!

But seriously, I'm looking for the biggest anchors I can find. I think I've settled on Tarox 6-pots 8) If it only saves you once a year, it's a good year :P

I think what you will find Gafmo was trying to say is, Your car is currently illegal and hence uninsured. Unless your motor came from a very small select few 1275 mokes which where released with Drums, you NEED Discs to be legal, weather it be safer etc is not the point the car MUST have Discs as per the ADR's.

Technically i would also suggest that the Blower would also need to be engineered prior to it being legal, but i could be wrong on this fact.
Anyone know what the law is on fitment on blowers and turbo's to N/A orginated engines?

In Canberra you need engineering approval to fit turbochargers and superchargers to a vehicle unless it is a retrofitted factory option, in which case you need to update your driveline and brakes to match (same as fitting a 1275 and discs to a Mini). But I believe fitting different cylinder heads (like converting to twin cam) may also requires engineering.

I too have a 1275 powered deluxe with drums and people go "how do you stop though?".

Well the speed limit is the factor here, my 1275 does the same speed as an 1100 and weighs the same so braking is the same. If an 1100 with drums is ok, why is a 1275 with drums not ok :?:

Legalities are the only factor here that should be adhered to, if regs say a 1275 MUST have discs then it MUST. I don't know if state by state the rules are different but I haven't heard anyone in Qld say that I must have discs, they just can't understand how I stop with drums :?

But to be fair, I too have discs on my replacement car that will have my current 1275 put into it.

Cheers
Steve

Thats the law in NSW too but its such a grey area now. The ADR's (ie/ pre-1971 dont need Engineers report for the power increase, but post 71 need them, and need the Emissions test (which most of our would fail no matter the setup) some tell me its not needed others tell me it is needed.
I know my insurance company was fine with it, but havnt had a claim so might get a suprise :(

Putting in another motor, required engineering without a doubt.

Peter
