...And so close to Mini Muster!!!! ![]() Dramas today with selecting 3rd and 1st gear when the car is on or off, clutch in or out - it makes no difference. When trying to select 1st or 3rd, it's like the 'H' pattern has gone and is now just an 'n' (only with 2nd and 4th...also with reverse being able to be selected). Mechanic reckons engine, clutch, firewall and all sorts of crap needs to come out to get the gearbox out...so right now i'm not a happy girl!! He said there could be a loose bolt or something to do with the selector which is causing the problem. Hopefully will have everything sorted in time for Mini Muster...or else i'm bringing it on a trailer ![]() |

A rod change will have 2 rods going from the g box to the stick, A remote will have an alloy housing running back instead ![]() Easy to tell once you know. Oh you will have to lie down and look under the car ![]() |

If your avatar is of your car, then it being a Clubman, it is most likely to have a rod change and this leads to a couple of possibilities for the loss of 1st and 3rd, neither of which are a great drama. It would be a shame for you to miss the muster so if you need someone to help you out, there are plenty of us ausminiers in Brisbane and one of us, including myself, should be able to offer some help. PM if needed. |

you'll need to lift the engine out (and take the clutch off) to get at the gearbox, but you most certainly do NOT need to remove the firewall!!! get on to your local ausminiers and they will help you out. put on a barbie for them or something ![]() |

yep no lift usually tells us its a remote change and it may just have a loose knunkle jhoint at back if its 1st and 3rd, thinks maybe if you are close enough a call to the Miniman might save a lot of work and money ![]() |

Ditto, mine has a rod change (although I think it may have originally been remote? - 71 clubbie). My lift is so barely recognisable, I would also say mine is a knock across if asked. KB |

Remove the gear lever boot, if you can see two screws holding the gear lever in place, if so then it is a remote type, if there is a metal retaining cup then it is a Rod Change, If it is a rod change, then remove gear lever and check the slot in the side near the bottom, this should have parallel sides if there is a wear mark in this area then it POSSIBLE that this could be your problem |
