Undo the screw. Its been a while since i adjusted points!!! Petronix all the way!!! Maybe the contacts are worn?

HOW DOES ONE ADJUST THE POINTS, THE CAR WON;T START AND I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY THE AUTO ELECTRICIAN THAT THE POINTS WON'T CLOSE, WHY HE DIDN;T DO IT I DON'T KNOW, SO HOW IS IT DONE? THANKS bRETT |

God the Old Days...as your Mech is also thinkining. Points are on a Plate which is held on by a Screw. Points are opened and Closed by the Central Square rounder on the corners on the Dizzy Shaft. Points are closed at the flat section of this square section on the Dizzy Shaft and you adjust them on the rounded section. If I make sence

check that the dizzy shaft isn't bent. I had this problem once, you might not be able to see it with your eye so check clearances on each lobe, if the points don't close it will be something to do with the dizzy lobes or points, a lot of parts shops have no idea when it comes to minis so check you have the right points as well. |

You will need two screw drivers brett. There is a little cut out in the body of the dizzy and on the back plate of the points, stick a suitably sized screw driver in there and twist it back and forth (after you have loosened off the locking screw towards the top of the points) to adjust the points. You will need to set the points between 0.014" - 0.016" (use feeler gauges). Once you have it about right tighten up the locking screw. Make sure you keep them clean and don't get oil / grease on the contact area. After you adjust them and get the car running check the dwell with a dwell meter (needs to be between 57° - 63°), If it isn't readjust the points to make sure the dwell is correct (I always aim for 60°). After that adjust the timing (should be around 7° BTDC). Just check in a manual first to make sure I got the numbers right - cause the dwell & timing are for my deluxe. Give me a call if that doesn't make sense at all. <edit> make sure you adjust the points when the little arm of the points is at the top (maximum opening) of one of the 4 lobes on the dizzy shaft (you will have to take the rotor button off in order to adjust there). Take the plugs out and put the car in gear and push the car back and forth to get the little arm on the points onto the top of one of the lobes. |
