If I buy/build a race car can I just rock up and race somewhere? Or do I have to get licenses and get the car race registered. |

If your talking about open competitive racing then there a couple of controlling bodies that make sure both the car and the driver are not a danger to themselves and most importantly, to others. So the car must comply with all manner of safety regulations such as the correct type roll cage, seat belts, modifications and the list goes on and on. The the driver must prove that he/she has the basic skills to be a racing driver and not some fool just let loose with a projectile. Then there is money - heaps of it to get to the starting line. Now if you are serious about it, you should join a car club that has a committment to racing and start going to races as a spectator, helper of what ever to get into tune with the procedures etc. You are in a better position to make a start. However there is also an option called track days where the money required is a lot less and the stringent rules are more free. Track days are where some tracks allow people in road cars to get a feel of unrestricted driving on a race track. Mike |

You need a cams licence to go to open practice days at Oran Park etc and to do Supersprints, it's best to join the Southern Sporting Car Club http://www.sscc.org.au/sscc/ The car doesn't need to be road registered but does need to pass scrutinering |

Thanks heaps for the replies, so looks like I need to start saving the dollars. Are hills climbs and things like that a similar procedure? |

Start off with something basic like Motorkhanas in your road Mini. It's cheap. Then if you get the bug you can sink your money into a dedicated race car. Preferably buy something that someone else has built up and log-booked. It's cheaper and easier than building a car up yourself. |
