Hi, What size spanner do require to tighten up the harmonic balancer bolt. Once the radiator is out what is the best way to tighten it. KaKa |

1-5/16" socket. Or a 33mm one (fits good too). If engine is in the car, select 4th gear and have someone hold the brakes on, HARD. If out of the car I remove starter and sit an old main bearing shell in the ring gear teeth, it locks it good and won't fall out. |

I finally sourced a 33mm spanner and tightened up my balancer bolt but it's been a few weeks. Does the radiator cowling"two piece" bottom seam go over the top seam or visa versa. Help appreciated. |

Top cowling goes over the bottom one, it is shaped to fit that way. |

would this bolt being loose cause "play" in the pully? i.e. if the bolt was loose would you be able to grab hold of the fan belt and move it backwards and forwards? Cheers, BC. |

BC, any "play" with a loose bolt should be minimal. The only time I could move the fan belt backwards and forwards easily without moving the crankshaft was when a dodgy engine assembler mashed up the Woodruff key. This is the half moon shaped washer that locks the pulley to the crankshaft. Normally it only feels as if a bit of movement is possible when the pistons are at top and bottom dead centre because the pistons have reached the limits of their travel and stopped moving while the crankshaft is still rotating happily but not exerting any force on the pistons so you cant feel the friction. If the pulley moves but the crankshaft does not then you have a problem. |
