Hi folks,

I did a search but couldn't find a thread discussing pros and cons of 4 pot calipers on Cooper S 7.5" brakes. If anyone knows of such a thread that already answers this, can you please post the link. :)

I'm a considering my options on building up disc brakes for 10 inch wheels and wondering whether I should stick with the standard calipers or go for 4 pot calipers of the type sold by Minispares / Minisport / et al.

I am undertaking a complete rebuild and my car will be a weekend driver - mostly around town but I want it to go, handle and stop well. After all, isn't that the point of the Mini? 8)

Any and all contributions appreciated with regard to performance / feel / pad wear / choice of disc / etc, especially if you have actually used 4 pot calipers on your road car with 10 inch wheels. :wink:

The standard Cooper S brakes were outstanding in their day and still do a pretty good job because it's such a light car. It's big bikkies for 4 pots, might be worth it if you were going racing but I would be saving the dough.

My Nb race car uses standard Cooper S stuff & braded lines - but with good pads. I have no issues!

std S callipers are the money. Stops hard and fast with a very firm pedal

I have the Mini Spares alloy 4 pot calipers and slotted discs on my road car and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. I'm running 10" ROH Contessas, adjustable lower arms and caster bars, and hydro suspension and I have none of the clearance problems that Mini Spares allude to.

Pedal feel is awesome, not as hard as standard S discs, and they stop brilliantly. On one long downhill run off the Snowy mountains last year I actually found they bit harder as they got hotter, I get the feeling I don't get their best tooling around town. I'm running EBC Blackstuff Kevlar pads.

The only problem I could report with them is that in my car with an 0.7" diameter master cylinder, I can't get the brakes to bite right at the top of the pedal stroke - the pads engage the discs about 1/4 through the stroke. I put this down to the additional fluid volume required to actuate the caliper pistons. This makes no difference to their stopping power, though.

I documented my conversion from drums in a thread last year, I'll dig up the URL and let you know.

I didn't think Cams let us use braded lines anymore? Or is it just my local scrutineer who has a hatred for them?

To be honest, I have assumed that the lines are braded. I have only used it twice since getting the keys and have not spent any time under it as it is well sorted. I am getting it on a hoist for a look in a few weeks time before putting it to bed for the rest of the year.
