There are none availible as a reproduction that I'm aware of (badges especially) . Why make a repro one , it's as bad as making a "genuine" cooper s repro .

Original badges turn up from time to time on ebay. You'll need deep pockets though.

There is a good write up about the sports850's history in the 3rd edition of the Mini Experience , colour scheme's were what was availible on standard 850's at the time as they were converted from standard cars .

My main concern with copies of the badges etc are people getting ripped off paying serious money believing they have a rare car only to find it's a repro , the ID plate said normal 850 , it's the car's history or provenence that proves them to be genuine . On a similar note I know someone in South Australia who paid good money for what was sold as an immaculately restored 1969 cooper S (the one without an ID plate) only to later find out it was a mini K built up into a very good S replica by a mini specialist . The mini specialist built it as a replica for the client in good faith , the client sold it on as being genuine and the buyer got stung .

If it made my car look as cool as the yellow sports 850 in that maitland promotional flyer that was going around, I'd put sports 850 badges on my deluxe.

As always, buyer beware. I wouldn't sell it as a sports 850.. I don't think I've ever seen a sports 850 for sale. If there was a sudden influx of them on the market, I think it would be kinda obvious!

I can think of around 30,000 compelling answers to that question.

I'd love to own a sports 850, but its pretty hard to justify that kind of money.

It's only money. For a rare car its def worth it. I would pay it for a rare mini!!

I know of one which was in Twba,. I missed out on it by about 1 hour , it was sold to a woman on the pension who had no idea what it was. It needed work, I am sorry I missed it to this day. That was about 12 years ago. Don;t know what ever happened to it..

I wouldnt even think about making a mini an 850 Sports replica (or even a Cooper S replica) if you plan on driving it anywhere and parking it there.

They get stolen just because they look like the real thing...

If you have a Genuine S or Sports 850, you wouldnt be driving it and parking it willy nilly I would hope...

Making a replica because you want to, fine, people have done that for a long time with S's but I wish there was an easier way to tell if they are real or not... because people get screwed by dud deals.

Buyer beware is all good and well, but its sometimes hard to tell on the replica's that are done well.

My 3c worth, keep the 1c :)

EDIT - This reply isnt aimed at the original poster, people can do what they like, its just a point I am making that personally I would never badge anything that would attract theives, they are not the smartest people and they will steal it because it looks the part

i honestly think that people who build cooper S replicas with boot board brackets and angled bits behind the grill and the correct tingamybob on the whatsit are disturbed.

if I did a sport 850 replica, it would be purely cosmetic mods to the exterior. it would be a give away with the 1275, custom dash, long range fuel tank etc...

I can barely afford my deluxe.. definately couldnt afford a good replica sport 850. and a real one? again.. whats the point.. can't drive it, whats the point!

If it's not a replica - its nothing unless its badged correctly - would you put a Ford badge on a Holden because you like the badge? :?

Exactly , it's been a few years since mine was registered and used often and when it was very few people knew what they were , now we even have our own spaceboy coming out with gem's like this when gaf spotted one in Sydney http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... c&start=30 . Their image has been lifted in the last few years from magazine articles like watto's in issue 3 (the guy's selling their sports850's should chuck a few bucks watto's way for eductaing people about them) , before that I had people telling me I'd made the badges up myself to make fools of the "experts" .

Historical preservation basically , they were the result of a BMC challenge to Peter Manton to prove there was a market in Australia for a performance mini . Without the sports850 the cooper would have been delayed a year or two more than it was as BMC thought it "too expensive and advanced " for the local market . Mine will eventually end up in a museum (not sure which one yet but will be willed to one) but till then I enjoy it and anyone that wants to have a look at it can . I'd like to be able to drive it but it's too much of a target for that now since the badges have sold for up to $500 each .

As for replica stuff it's not just the sports850's I'm concerned about , Doogie will most likely remember me raising similar concerns with him when he released his Aussie GT badge replica's . They were excellent because they looked good but were still identifiable as being a replica badge/sticker and not an original . Something needs to be done to keep the Australian mini heritage intact .
