Post subject: | Need help with brakes |
Hi guys, I just replaced all my wheel cylinders (drums all round) and brake hoses on my 78 clubby. I bled everything starting from furthest corner and working inwards, until no air bubbles were coming through. The problem is that the brake pedal goes down to about 1inch off the floor before the brakes bite. Pumping the brakes doesn't make any difference. I can't find any fluid leaking anywhere and theres no loss from the MC. What's going on??? hg. |

Sometimes I find air gets trapped in the connecting pipes between the front wheel cylinders, try undoing the highest nipple on it a turn and bleed it there too. Matt Read TheMiniMan reckons bleed it with all the front adjusters loose, then adjust brakes afterwards. |

Make sure there is no air trapped in the MC also.... |

I adjusted the brakes before I put the wheels back on, but reading some of the posts here, it seems that a tiny bit of adjustment makes a lot of slack at the pedal. So gonna jack it up and try that again. DrMini: I doubt that, because the bleed nipple is higher than the tube, on the far side cylinder from the MC... the tube has to fill up before fluid can come out the nipple... But first, I have a wedding to go to... dang weddings taking up my mini time! |

Yer no point adjusting drums with wheels off. Jack each end up so the wheels rotate. you will find they will be spinning freely. With the adjustment of drums you have a pyramid style on the end of the adjuster. You are looking for the shoes to be slightly rubbing when you can feel its on the flatter section and not the corners of the adjuster ![]() |

That picture is true only for the rear drums. The fronts use a completely different system which is a cam type and there is one adjuster per shoe so 4 total for the front. That is 6 total adjusters per car. |
