The oil temperature sender records up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit or 150 degrees Centigrade. It has either a 5/8" UNF or a 1/8" x 27 NPT thread, and a single blade connection to the oil temperature gauge.

The 1/8" x 27 NPT sender kit comes complete with adapters that will allow fitment to 1/4" x 18, 3/8" x 18 and 1/2" x14 mounting holes. The sender should not be overtightened on installation, but if problems with sealing are encountered then a little PTFE tape on the threads of the sender usually does the trick, making sure that the PTFE does not interfere with a good earth connection between the body of the sender and it's mounting position.

There's no hole for a gearbox temp sender on the box, there is a reverse detent spring under a large bolt on the left front of the box however...

I've seen a smiths one where you buy and adaptor for the sump plug and then plug the sender into the adaptor. That way you don't have to tap a new hole in the g'box.

Ahh ok, your initial post wasn't very clear. I figure you might use a water temp gauge to do the job, or something very similar. So the post below from a while back might help. Thanks to dr mini in aust: drmini in aust wrote: The temp sender in head is either 5/8-16 (UNS bastard thread) or 5/8-18 UNF (depending who you talk to). All I can say is, a 5/8-18 UNF tap cleans it out properly without removing metal so IMO it's close enough. AND, you can buy them... Wink

Mate, just had a look at my MS cattledog. You would need SIB420 or SIB420MG (or you could probably find some other type of gauge to fit - in my cattledog it says that gauge will fit). You would also need HPS8 ("a union to fit the sump plug hole to accept Smiths oil temperature gauges,but will only take the small capillary type bulb as used on very early and current smiths oil temp gauges,does not fit the larger capillary fitted to some smiths gauges unless you have the hole machined out larger."). I would assume you would still need some kind of temperature transmittal tube (possibly a oil pressure line?).

why dont you just drill out a non magnetic sump plug and tap that ? unless you want a magnetic sump plug of course..
