Post subject:  Reaming out rear radius arm bushes

I'm setting up to ream the bronze bushes out on a pair of radius arms i have overhauled.
The tool to do so is in the post.
H9 Reamer 25/32-27/32 19.75" - 21.50"

Now do I need a ream guide for the job, or will the reamer guide itself through as the bush is at the extreme end of the arm?
When maching these bushes, what sort of clearance would you give over the measured shaft diameter (.820")

cheers

Measured shaft diameter should be 0.8125", (13/16") check your measurements.
You need to attach a guide to the end of the reamer so it aligns properly with the needle bearing, either with that bearing in or out (depends how you do it).

Ok, I'll arrange a guide, but I reckon I might have problems with the standard guides they sell...might not be long enough to go right through..

I remeasured the new shaft, and repeated it a few times. Still comes up as .820" instead of .825" . It might be the calipers, but I doubt it (they're Mitutoyo and in good shape. It's only 12 in here at the moment, but I don't think that's the problem either..

The shaft is 13/16". So are the bearings.

Ahh yes you are right, I was reading the vernier graduated caliper poorly. (I used to sign off competency tasks for this too, I might have to revoke my own comp ;) )

i dont use the bush on any of my mini's i use a nother roller bearing only coz it's much easeir to install and only costs a little bit more

That seems like an option I would take in a second. Drilling the arm out for an extra needle bearing in the non-moke arms is the problem. I even have the spare bushes here if I chose to. I don't have either the drill large enough for the job or the drill bit either...

Anyways. I have a thought that to make a correct length and diameter guide, I might get a 2nd hand radius arm shaft (in relatively good condition...which I have) and have the end machined and tapped to accept the same thread as is on the end of the expanding reamer. I think it should be large enough to accept the thread.

Once the tool is made, it's made..

Question is however, if the diameter of the shaft is 13/16 (0.8125) how many thou' of an inch over should the bushes be reamed to?

1/2 a thou is plenty. Any clearance will only get bigger...
I ream them until I can just push the shaft through.

Yeah I could arrange that. Will have to wait a few weeks however..
