Hi,
Can anyone tell me what model distributors are used in Mk1's ans 2's.
i.e. Lucas XXD Part number appearing on body 12345?
All assistance greatly appreciated!

I believe it's 23D4 for MK1, and 25D4 for MK2 |

The Leyland Mini parts book from mid 68 (Yes that is right, Leyland in 68) lists the Cooper S distributor as.. 29D4 62941090A One of my Leyland workshop manuals says.. Early = 23D4 - 40819B Late = 23D4 40819H or AYG 0175 Clubman GT = 29D4 or AYG 0175 But I am sure there are more.... |

Tomorrow I will take a look at the 2 Cooper S dizzys that I have and check the numbers. One came with my 68 S and the other was bought from Mini Kingdom in the early 80s. |

Right, my 68 Cooper S came with 23D4 40819H 1 67. The other one is 23D4 41153 34 74. This one was bought new in 82. |

Mk1 S cars used the 23D4 in 2 versions with service Nos 40819B and 40819H. These have slightly different advance curves to suit the 2 different standard camshafts used. The advance curve is for 100 octane leaded fuel and both required a retardation of the static timing to stop pinging at low engine speeds when 97 octane leaded fuel was used. It was pretty common to use aviation fuel or fuel additives such as benzine to boost the octane rating of 97 octane fuel back up to 100+ octane. The first type 40819B is for the AEG148 cam used in 970, 1071 and 1275 cars up to engine No 9FSAY 40006. The second type is for 1275 cars using the AEG510 cam. The only difference is the second version has slightly more advance at low speed (1 to 2 deg?) to suit the AEG510 cam. The advance curve tolerances for both versions overlap each other so in practice it probably doesn't matter which one you use and in any case after 40+ years the advance curve in either is probably not accurate. The OZ MK2 S and Clubman GT use the 29D4 distributor marked AYG0175. Later GT distributors have only a Lucas service No (IIRC 62941090). These are Australia only Lucas designs (also came in 29D6 and 29D8 versions) and parts are scarce. Hope this helps RonR |

BMC UK issued a technical bulletin on the introduction of the 40819H series distributor (Bulletin No. 1A 48 F19 dated 5th November 1965). It quotes the change point as engine no. 9F/SA/Y36587 which dates to April 1965, although I have seen an `H' series distributor dated `3 65'. Unlike its predecessors the `H' series has an oil sealing ring in the mounting shank. Referring to Australian Cooper S's in particular, does anyone know the introduction date for the 29D4 62941090A Lucas Australia distributor? The Lucas parts list AV3 just states 1968-70. I have come across one dated 10 68, but a previous comment on this tread hints that it may have been many months earlier. John |

I am trying to track down the introduction date for the Lucas Australia 29D4 distributor in the MkI Cooper S. There are no hints in the parts books. Current wisdom is that it was `late' 1968 while the MkI was still in production. The earliest example I have seen so far was dated 10/68. Can anyone beat that for an earlier date on one of these units (do not confuse it with the UK-made 23D4 40819). If it helps, the likely vehicle candidates will be in the range of YKG2S2 4000 to YKG2S2 4600. Thank you for your help. Regards, John |

The site's Cooper S info (apart from production details) seems to be confined to the Mk2, and my enquiry concerns the MkI. I appreciate what you have done.
