The only mini I have driven with a 4 blade fan was pretty wild and had a straight cut gearbox as well so it probably isn't much help but you couldn't hear the fan over the gearbox so not super noisy ...

Don't chrome the fan.
Chrome can make them brittle and you can't see the cracks under the chrome.

The 16 blade metal fan was developed for Australian conditions.

I personally wouldnt bother with a metal fan as they dont move as much air through the radiator as the good ol' plastic multi fin yellow ones.

I have the 16 blade metal fans on all my Minis, I won't use anything else.
I found the yellow plastic ones noisy, and the white plastic ones chuck blades off.
My Mini has 86.6HP ATW, the wife's 59.4 ATW. Neither of them ever overheats. I doubt our 1412 stroker van will either.

I have used the 4 blade fans from time to time and yes they are noisier than 16 blade, but then a Cooper S is noisy at 4000 rpm. It makes more of a roar than the normal fan. It depends on your own personal requirements as to how loud you like your mini to be.

4 blades just give a good hummmm,,, they`re fine,,, i actually like them myself,,, but that`s not to say that they`re "Needed",,, they are good for high speed cooling situations as they allow more air past the blades than a 16 blade does, but again , just as to good Doc says--> they`re not really needed nor are they a necessity

& i also concur with the Doc on the white plastic fans thing,,,, they`re a very dangerous piece of thing,,, get rid of them,,, not only do they occasionally throw blades & become YUK CITY,,, but they go """BANG""" in a big way sometimes too

YUK!!!!!!!!!!!

I have had this experience with the white fans once and once only!! Never again the fins get to brittle around the hub!!
Everyone has thier own personal, professional and experienced opinions.

I currently have a white plastic fan on my 1275. I've had the yellow plastic ones in the past and the only problem with the one I had was the blades curled back towards the engine and began to foul on things :x I prefer the plastic fans to the metal ones because their so lite, might free up 1 or 2 hp if I'm lucky  . If the white/clear ones are pron to snapping I might keep an eye out for a yellow one.
Why do the white ones snap and not the yellow plastic fans :?:

I run a standard metal 16 blade fan. When driving around town or on the highway I can see the temp gauge constantly going up and down (thermostat closing and opening). I'm happy with it and don't understand why you would need a 4 blade fan. I suggest you looking at the rest of your cooling system before you think a fan will fix your over heating problems. (I am also running a standard aussie 3 core, 16 gills/inch radiator and standard water pump).
