| Post subject: | Wiring Klaxon Horn |
Hi i recently put in a Klaxon horn and to wire it up i just took the 2 purple wires from the old horn and put them on the new horn. The horn is working, however i think that the extra power is blowing the fuse because i just put a new one last night and its already blown. Its only the fuse on the left hand side as ur looking at it. Would the headlights be blowing the fuse? I got H4's but im yet to put in a relay for these. Do i need to wire in a relay for the horn? How would i do this? Cheers |

Definitely yes. Unless you do, the horn is drawing lots of current through the horn switch which will prematurely wear the contacts due to excessive arcing. Do a search around, there's a few threads with circuit diagrams and descriptions for installing relays. |

Some time back in Brisbane, I had a mate in his mini van blare his after market air horns at me while I fiddled around inside the garage taking my time. In a very short amount of time the horn contacts welded together and it stayed on for good (until we disconnected it).. |

I presume this is one of those modern klaxon horns - Red plastic trumpet and a silver base ? Try swapping the leads over - all it needs is power on one side ( the "+" side) and an earth (on the "-" side) It may be that is all thats wrong. I have one on my mini and it just plugged in and worked. If its a genuine Klaxon - the old type from 70 years ago it may be 6v instead of 12v and need to be wired differently. Mike |

Mike Hi yea is the moden one, red trumpet with silver base. Does the original wires have the earth already on it, because they are both solid purple arnt they? Ill try swapping them around and see if it blows another fuse. Cheers |

Glad you asked that question - the original horns were the earth. Get a bit of wire with a connector on it and run that from the negative side of the horn to earth on the car body. Then plug in one of the purple wires onto the positive and press the horn button. If that doesn't work plug in the other purple wire and try it. I bet your car had twin horns - a high tone and a low tone. Mike |

Hi i just had a single horn, the car is a 78 clubman. When i pressed the original horn it was a single tone. Ill try swapping the wires over and see if it still blows the fuse, if it does ill run a earth wire. Thanks for the help |
