Post subject:  Headlining replacement

Hi Guys,
Browesed the forum for a while before joining in. Like myself I see a few threads on headlinings!!!! (Buggers to do) I spotted this months ago so I thought it might be useful.
HEADLINING
To fit the new headliner you will need to remove windscreen, rear window, rear quarter lights, interior lights, inside mirror and the draught excluder around the door apertures.
It is best to do it on a warm day or in a warm garage
Having removed all the necessary parts you can then remove the old headliner. You will see the headlining is glued over the lips of the body, remove the two 'C' post trim panels between the rear quarter light and the rear window . Gradually peel away the material from the edges all around the roof cavity. You will then find that the headlining is held in the roof by six hoops with caps on each end, which insert in the holes above the cant rails. Once the headlining is free you will be able to spring these hoops away from the body.
Note that each hoop has a different coloured cap on the end. These hoops need to be fitted into the new liner in the same sequence.
Always take note when removing the old liner of how the metal hoop fitting is in place in the loops and where the headlining is cut away.
This is so that when you tension the material across the car the lining curves away from the metal hoop when it is glued to the lip.
To get the correct position of these cut outs, fold the old ling in half at each loop position to identify the centre of the lining. Then measure the distance from the middle mark to the top trimmed edge of the loop. Mark each loop in the same way. Make corresponding marks on the new liner and cut away the material making sure not to cut through any machine stitching line as this can cause the stitching to come undone.
FITTING
1. First insert the metal hoops into the lining (you may need to sand the ends so that they slip in more easily) Centralise all the hoops in the lining.
2. Starting at the centre of the car insert the hoops in the cant rail.
3. Pull the front lining towards the windscreen tension and then clip to the metal lip of the aperture, do the same to the rear window you should now have tension from the front and the back.
4. Now clip the sides between the stitching lines to the body increasing the tension all the way.
5. Apply contact adhesive to the underside of the material and to the lip of the roof working a small area at a time allowing the glue to go tacky and pulling firmly into place tensioning as you go pulling out any wrinkles.
6. Wrinkles and creases acquired during storage and transport will disappear a few days after installing.
7. Carefully trim off excess material and stick any loose pieces of material down at the rear window fit in the side posts and you can the refit all windows etc to finish the job.

Hey gmick,

Perfect timing,

I've just bought some carpet, velour, and about to buy some material to create the headlining.

Here's another link that talks about doing the install, you can never have too much information. :D

If I'm successful and it looks good. I'll post some pics of an install. If not I'll come back and edit this post to not mention it...

I have just removed the lining from my Clubman and there is sign of these coloured caps (on the end of each hoop I assume). All mine are white. I had a look at the other Clubman I have with no headlining and it still has a few plastic caps in the holes and they are white as well. Are these coloured caps used in ALL Minis?

The "coloured caps" are used to stop the hoops from rattling in the mini's body. You insert them in the shell before you insert the rods.

The rods have coloured paint applied in their center to tell you the order they go into the car from front to back. For a sedan, the colours are (in this order) :

1 brown
2 yellow
3 yellow
4 yellow
5 orange
6 brown

For me, the caps that are inserted into the shell are all white/opaque colour but when I removed the headlining, I have not yet removed the hoops from where they are stitched onto the headlining.

Correct me I'm wrong but... Are you saying that (from the factory) both the caps AND metal rods/hoops (painted in the centre, but covered once they are sewn into the main material piece) are a matching colour?

Nope, the caps are only opaque white, they serve no aesthetic purpose.

Ah - so only the metal hoops have the colours on them. Thank Mick!

Sorry to bust in on the topic, although it is about roof lining.
Hopefully I'm just missing something in the reading, but so far all the roof linings mentioned, and the ones I have seen are a one piece lining.
My grunt has a two piece.
Rear goes in first, then the front which overlaps the rear by about an inch from memory (could be wrong, but it does overlap!).
Is this a standard roof lining on any mini? Or am I just special?
(everyone keeps telling me I'm special! ):D

Early minis had two piece linings like yours. They're quite handy actually...

Thanks mick. Good to know that it is standard, and not some foreign thing! (foreign as in other make car! must be politically correct now!) :D

My recent attempt. second hand hoodliner can also be used quite successfully..

Heat gun works wonders during winter. Sets the glue off quicker
