Hey all,
I am trying to get some new switches for my new dash.

I have the washer switch sorted and a few others but need two switches for the headlights and my 2 speed wipers.

I have been advised that I need a dpdt switch but also from another person that I need a 3pdt switch.... Which is correct?

I am getting those toggle switches by the way.

I have also been advised to lok at amperage of the wiper motor to make sure this will not burn out the switches. do I need to worry about this?

I am about as electrically knowledgable as a door... and not an electric door either. I will probalby learn a bit very soon as I have my wiring in a bag at home and it will be getting but back in my freshly resprayed shell soon...ARRRRRRGHH

dpdt = double pole double throw (for each pole)
-can come in two or three position versions and will have two rows of three pins, or two lots of: one common and one for each 'throw'

3pdt = tripple pole double throw
similar setup except three sets of three pins...

If I were you I would pull out the wiring diagram and have a look at the switch that is standard and buy another one of the same type.

According to Mini King catalog the Police Spec Mk2 S with 2 speed wipers use a BHA4786 toggle switch, if this helps.
I have one here, it is also used on an MGB (not sure what year).
No idea how it is wired, if I did I would hook mine up...

I currently use a headlamp switch, this gives 2 speeds but the park doesn't work... :!:

This is probably based off the later (UK) 14W wiper motor?? but I'd expect to be similar for other motors. (the switch hook up would be the same.. just which connectors are which at the motor)
I borrowed this diagram from here....

http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et219a.htm

This may help as well...
http://www.kirkhammotorsports.com/manual2/electrical/lucaswipermotor.shtml

( The 35927 is the equivalent of the BHA4786 accrding to http://www.lucaselectrical.co.uk/catalogues/XCB634_switchgear_crossref.pdf )

Haven't tried these myself yet..... (though have a 35927 ready to go.... just have to "liberate" the 2 speed dr3a out of the Humber Vogue..)

Hey All,

I am on my way home now and will read through the comments more thoroughly on arrival.

I wanted to let you know that I am not wanting the original switch but instead looking for something like this
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=ST0570&CATID=28&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=448

I want that style to go with the dash theme ( i hate using that word)

As Doc has experienced may have trouble with auto park with a generic switch....

but that too can apparently be overcome using a relay....

see info on this link....

http://www.geocities.com/sprite-midget/wipers.htm

Been doing some research into this myself .. but not yet attempted anything...
so can only point at web sites that I've found trolling about...

Hopefully they'll be of some help.

Here's a bit more background to the BHA 4786 switch and the two-speed wiper.
