Post subject: | Petrol smell in cabin |
Hi all. Been filling up the tank and I usually stop filling when the first click appears from the nozzel. There is no sign of leak at the cap or any sign of crack on the tank. Just want to know is the breath pipe located on the top of the tank? Any solution to stop the petrol smell in the cabin? |

give it a couple of months and you wont even notice it. it's all part of the joy and excitment of driving a mini. soon you'll look forward to filling up the mini so it smell is storng enough for your nose to notice it again. |

I'm guessing from your username it's a Rover mini and possibly fuel injected so there should be less likely places in the engine bay for it to leak but still check all the fuel hose/pipe joins and the carby or injectors for leaks or weeps . There should still be a breather that fits on top of the tank , check it's still got the pipe attached , not sure where it goes on a rover but have a look for it and follow it down , should exit under the car from memory . |

ha! i told you that you have turned into a petrol sniffer! (on a side note: i agree with andbat, you kind of get used to it and just accept it as part of the many wonders of driving a mini!) |

No car should have a fuel smell inside the cabin unless something is wrong. Hopefully it isn't a fuel leak. Slight leaks can be hard to track down because the fuel evaporates quickly. It will normally leave a stain which is a tell tale. A leaky fuel cap can give you a fuel smell when the flipper windows are open and you are going slowly or stopped. The other option is a broken or disconnected breather. The breather for a single tank goes from the top of the tank down and out under the back of the car. Twin tanks have a breather each which go from the top of each tank across to the other side of the car and down and out the bottom. If it's a Rover then I don't know. Pete |

A rover tank should have a plastic line that runs to front of the car into the charcoal cannister. most times the line off the tank is split inside the boot somewhere. |

I agree with peter. Your car shouldn't have a fuel smell in it. You need to start at the tank and work your way forward checking all connections & hoses for leaks. |

Thanks for the comment guys. I currently had a single carb. The smell most likely comes from the breath pipe. I will check it out this weekend, thank you once again. |

My mini was leaking from the fuel pump, once that was replaced it made a huge difference. |
