Post subject:  Questions about my recently purchased 850
Hi all,
I have just got my 850 home and would like to understand what I have a little better.
The body number is YMA2S1 165907 28581. both these numbers are stamped on the plate but only the 28581 is stamped into the firewall.
Does anyone know why this is. :?:
The engine number is 8AM/U/H 487403
Stamped onto the wiper motor is 10/62.
Colour is Smoke Grey
Would anyone know where this car fits into the 850 build window? :?:
The interior is in imaculate condition with rubber floor mats and under lay still in 90% condition.
The rear seat looks as if it has never been sat on which brings me to my next question.
The rear of the seat is held in differently to the later cars I have experience with, also the base of the seat is different in the fact that it does not appear to have the metal frame work of the later seats. It also has a piece of card under the seat swab which looks as new and factory as does all the interior paint.
Is this the normal set up for an 850? :?:

My car is not an 850 but a relatively early Deluxe YMA2S2 (10/65).
Ive only ever seen this mini up-close-and-personal so to speak, so dont know how any other (70's) cars may have their seats held in...

For what its worth....

the upright part of the rear seat is locked down with two small diam nuts under the parcel shelf (access from the boot) and two rubber covered pins to lock the seat in at the base into the rear/boot bulkhead.
The base part of the seat is held in with two threaded pins that slide into the extreme ends of the leading edge of the metal seat base and two wing nuts secure it in place. It has the usual large wire frame under the padding but is not built on a ridgid frame.

Under the rear seat is the same full width cardboard as you describe in your car.
The rear of my car was only ever sat in by one child and is in similarly pristine condition.
The flooring is original rubber (in the same colour as the vinyl upholstry - blue) with underfelt and securing 'plugs' at the sides by the doors.

I'll get to your PM later today Dave but the earlier 850's (pre 1963 from memory) had a BMC Australia number on the ID plate (the first one) followed by the body number so they could distinguish between various BMC models (somebody must of had a master list at the factory with every car produced and it's identity from that number , shame it isn't about now ...) with the same body number since they all started at 500 . Interestingly though they dropped the system while there was still only one model of mini availible in Australia . This number causes a lot of confusion , I've seen it quoted as a date (yes , that's how people swear their mini was a 1957 or a 1983 model ....) and as a very long winded VIN style number , all causing confusion for people down the track .

mine was the same when i first bought it

just not in that good of condition
