I have just put my s/c gears in my gearbox and found if i put any preload even pushing by hand on the locking plate where the doubble row bearing sits 3&4th baulk rings are jaming and they will not spin free . I have had the gears out that many times thinking that I have done somthing wrong :?
The baulk rings are new so I changed them with old good condition ones I had and that fixed the problem. But every thing is new and I would rather use the new ones. Has any one had this problem with new s/c gear sets?

When I talked to Matt about baulk rings he said that some new ones have a ridiculous amount of clearance ie. 60+ thou...
Have you checked the baulk ring clearance?
Also I have heard that some of the gears may not spin freely until it is torqued up fully...

I have had the Box together and torqued up as i have herd the same thing this did help a little. I also had .020 faced of the new baulk rings befor I fitted them. It seems like they dont sit on the cone/taper very well.

Have you torqued the box up yet? - the assembly instructions I have says the gears can bind and not spin free until everything is together properly. Or am I misreading your situation :?

The new baulk rings are pretty aggressive when sitting in the cones. I did remember something about the baulk rings from when I was looking at a set of straight cut gears a while back.

Quote:
Please ensure you checkyour bauk rings for trueness as both genuine and MS are not as true as our C-22a1741 when fitting this gearkit. Always select 1st and 4th gears when locking up gearbox for dismantling and assembly

Is there anything in this??

Mick I have sent emails to them but they never reply. I just dont want to order new baulk rings and find the same fault. So I put this post up to get some back ground info befor I throw any more money at this black hole they call a mini. :)

You will need to figure out why it works with the old baulk rings and not the new ones. Compare the width of the rings new and old (noting that you have already had .020" removed). How do the new rings "sit" on the gears compared to the old ones. What is the clearance between the ring and the gear, new and old? Which new baulk rings do you have? The steel backed competition ones or new OEM ones or new repro ones? The steel backed comp ones have already been thinned down!
Sometimes, as mentioned the new rings are aggressive and will grab on the gear causing things to jam up, but that doesn't sound like what your problem is. Sounds more like a width issue with everything not fitting together as they should.

Depending where you buy them and which ones, some of these current baulk rings fit like crap- not only is the taper angle wrong but they are oval, too.

The oil can make them a little too sticky as well. If you assemble it up and use a soft drift to move the gently push the baulk rings away from the cones a back a little, you might notice that the surface tension might release the lock if this is the case.

The oil I used in my box was a little too thick as well...

As drmini in aust has said..............
Also some of the new gear and cones (where the baulk rings sit) from some places are of the same quality as some of the baulk rings so this may also be part of the problem.
Did you get them from the motherland or sourced locally?
