Hi,

My name is David and I've just bought a 68 Mini as a project. While cleaning the engine I took out the Clutch and Brake master cylinder with the plan of giving them a light rub with wet and dry to get them looking shinny again. I've been told not to as all it will do is make them form surface rust in 6 months time. I was wondering if this is the case and if so how do I go about cleaning them up.

Thanks
Dave

Mate, if you do do it, I wouldn't leave it bare, put a clear coat over it to stop it from rusting or rub them back and paint etc.

TBH I'm a lazy bugger so I would just leave them in place and sand them while they are attached to the car and then paint.

My 2c.

Strip them down and get them re-plated - or buy new ones direct from UK Minispares for $330 for the pair (larger brake cylinder - cheaper for the small one)

In 1968 Master Cylinders were Tin plated Not Zinc Plated as they are now, If you want them to look original have them tin plated and ask the platers to put a bung in the cyliner area so there is no build up of tin in that area, Other than that ask them to zinc plate and clear Passivate them, However I would only do this if the bore is not damaged
