what makes an a-series motor an a-series??

Like what separates it from a b-series, apart from size?

Im just curious as i dont understand because sprite engines etc are a-series so i figured its not to do with gearbox being directly underneath.
so what differnentiates it from other motors in general?

A series started with the Austin A30 and Series 2 Morris Minor, in the early 50s. That one was 803cc so the A series has come a long way.
Morris 850 was the first transverse application, but the 850 block itself is pretty much identical to a Morris Minor 1000 one, but stroke is shorter and the end of the crank is different design.

BMC used a letter code for their different block types, A, B, C, E, O are some.

so a-series refers the type of block manufactured by BMC?

even though same as B, C, E, O they were only differentiated by size, but all the same pretty much.

No , the A and B series were similar in appearance though the B series was a lot larger in every dimension (imagine a bread and butter plate beside a dinner plate , they look similar but a lot different in size) . The other motors listed were all different in other ways , some were 6 cylinder , some were overhead cam etc . The A and B being similar was just a fluke really as they were the two most common motors when they started the A , B etc engine names , the rest just followed on since they'd started the naming system .

When did the A+ engine appear and in what vehicles? What makes it different to an A Series engine?
