As you raise the engine the angle of the driveshafts will allow the pot joints to separate, spilling greasy ball bearings onto the ground.

Just make sure you have snipped the wire/cable ties/banding that holds the big end of the rubber boots first.

alternatively, once you have lifted the motor a little bit, reach down the back of the motor with some sort of prybar and with a little bit of force you can pop the pots out of the gearbox. No grease going everywhere, but you have to have drained the oil.

I have always undone the bottom balljoint when 'popping' the pot joints on mine.
Motor has been in and out many many times and we pop the ball joint first - everytime.

I dont know if you can get enough leverage just by lifting the motor... and even if you do, good luck getting it back in!

Remove nut off bottom ball joint,
Use splitter and get the ball joint popped/split
pull the wheels out as much as you can
Use a wedge (wood, metal, whatever) and a hammer to get the pot joint seperated - its only a circlip holding it
then lift motor, or whatever your doing.

Pete

If you have a manual for your model there should be pictures showing you the process. - At least mine has

What exactly are you doing though? Pulling out the motor - I mean, no-one asked why you want to pop the pots off...

Peter.

I am actually curious as to why you drop the botom ball joint and not the top. Surw you get the same amount of swing with either the top or the bottom but the sheer weight of the brake assembly on the lower control arm makes it come off the upper arm that much more easily.

As I said just curious.

Mike, I am guessing he wants to remove the complete driveshaft & cv, which I think would be easier by cracking both ball joints.

You need a "ball joint splitter" - sissor type is best - less damage to setup

Dont know mike, just always done that. Yes, split both for removal but for pot joints, just undo the bottom one, then have enough movement to pop the pot off and lift motor out...
