Post subject:  Removing window regulator - almost there...

I've almost removed my first window regulator on my Mini K, except the "winder post", if I can call it that, doesn't seem to fit through the gap. :?

According to the Mini Black Book etc, it's simply a matter of winding it to full lock and then passing the whole mechanism through space #1 in the image below. However, I can't fit the "winder post", located at the top of space #2. through without damaging the body of the door.

Surely there is a means to do it without taking such drastic measures?

It will fit without damaging the door.
Hold the assemble square and in a position to give yourself the most possible clearance.
You will find a position where it will be free to move and no part will foul on anything.
You will have to flex the inner panel just a tiny bit to get it out. This will not do any damage. Don't force it, will come fairly easily.

Good luck, Dave

Thanks Dave, when you say square, do you mean vertically as it is in the picture, or turned on its side? Does this matter?

I'll keep trying, gently! :D

As it is in the picture. Get it as high as you can because the gap in the door is widest at that point!

It doesn't have to be on full lock one way to do the step you are having trouble with.
Adjust the position so the arm on the mechanism is not fouling in the bottom of the door cavity.

Got it sorted! :) As you said, just easing the arm through the large gap and then gently flexing the inner panel as I passed the winder arm from the smaller gap to the large gap.

Does the other end of the door lock remote rod (the long flat bit connecting the door lock mechanism to the interior handle) come off? I have tried rotating this way and that, applying CRC, and trying (for an hour or so!) to move it down the vertical beam at the rear of the door. I am getting the car sandblasted soon - should I just leave them in there?

I had the same trouble trying to get the connecting bar out. It should come out, it nearly comes out but it doesn't quite come out.... I'm sure there's a knack to it, something to do with the placement of ones tongue while you do it...

Still I ended up leaving them attached while the car was blasted and it caused no problems when blasting the inner doors.

You can of course leave it there but its easy enougt to get out.
Firstly you will have to undo the 1/4 " unf screw that holds the window track at the bottom of the door. you will find the head of the screw on the lower outside section of the dool on the same face as the door catch toungue.
Once you have removed the screw slide the "U" section all the way down the window track past where the screw was and its out.
Considerable effort will be required to flex the track far enough eway from the door frame to get the "U" past it.
Again Good luck

Thanks Dave - I thought so, obviously I haven't applied enough force to the track.
