TIGHTEN UP YOUR FRIGGIN' WHEELNUTS YOU STUPID @#$@%^*!!! Been working on the van to get it ready for a RWC, and had the front wheels off a few days ago to replace the shocks. Been driving it around a bit since, road testing engine tweaks. Did the oil & filter tonight, along with the rocker clearances. Time for another test run, then. Out we go on my usual loop which normally takes in a stretch of the West Gate freeway, but tonight I figured I had learned enough and took a short cut back home. Bloody glad I did -- slowly taking a 90* corner a K or two from home and the inside front wheel goes knockedy-knockedy and feeds back through the steering. Knew straight away what I'd (not) done, so pulled over and nearly all the wheel nuts on both front wheels had worked themselves nearly all the way off. If I'd taken the freeway, I reckon I would have lost one (or both) front wheels at warp speed ![]() ![]() I've used up my luck for this week I think. |

Also important to check your wheel nuts regularly for a while after replacing wheel studs. I put some longer wheel studs when I installed my white sport pack wheels and everything was torqued up with my torque wrench like I always do and I drove around for a couple days. Then one day I noticed a weird feeling and could only think of one thing that could cause it, I stopped the car and sure enough the wheel nuts had started to loosen off. So I tightened them up and drove home. I torqued them back up and carried the torque wrench around for while and checked them regularly. |

Cheers, BC. Don't get into Altona in the Minis much, I usually shuttle between here and work in South Melbourne. Closest is the Kmart and Burson's in Altona North ![]() Here's the K: ![]() This is the van (now minus stickers and racks): ![]() |

I normally leave the car in the air until I do the nuts up, then the last thing I do when I put it down is tighten them up. No eye deer what happened this time around, brain fade most likely.. even though I tell myself not to forget it ![]() You're right though, I'll find myself nipping up the wheel nuts every time I get in it for a while ![]() |
